...well I've decided eating and paying the mortgage are overrated so planning to focus on important stuff this year........with the RS day at Oulton Park cancelled this year the next one in 2022 would be a nice target! :)

Cheers,

......I was asked how much I paid for the 180MPH speedo and the answer was I honestly don't know and probably as much as I can force Mr Cook to take!.....

Gary acquired this some ago with a potential 74 Carrera project in mind, when I asked how much he wanted for it he told me what it owed him, which is absolute pennies, and said I could have it for that!

....there's no way I could accept that, Gary knows what it's worth and he could sell it for 4-5 times what he paid if he offered it for sale. We'll work out suitable recompense and I'll make sure it's fair.

In a hobby where Porsche Tax is the norm it's so refreshing dealing with someone that's more than fair....Gary Cook truly is a class act 8)

Hi Darren, I'm sure Mike's got his own people for shot peening and so on, but thought it worth mentioning Sandwells who did the finish on the RSR gearbox components. Their 'Superfinish' is a process that takes place after the peening, it's used in F1 gearboxes and so on. Might be a bit over the top, but people who used the box said of was the best 915 they'd ever tried.

https://sandwell-uk.com/surface-enginee ... finishing/

There's a mod to the input shaft too, Mike's probably on it but described here.....

Hope that's of some help.

Thanks Mike, will certainly discuss with Mr Bainbridge :thumbright:

I doubt quite the same but I actually had the components polished in one of my 2CV gearboxes! :)

Cheers,

The crown wheel and pinion arrived from Tandler Racing today which led to a couple of hours spent playing with the ratio calculator......

......it certainly highlighted how incredibly close the 8:35 is to the 7:31 and how it keeps the revs up and engine spinning......no change in RSR character yet a stronger upgrade and a great recommendation from Mr B....

Image

....and what a glorious piece engineering it is too 8) ......

......I know much of the Porsche community these days gets excited about bling interiors and quilted leather engine sound pads, and each to their own.....

.....but often it's the things you don't see that gets me chubby! :)

Cheers,

Well I for one think all this detail is cool. That’s what makes projects like yours so intrinsic.

Keep the details coming. It’s going to be another cracker of a car.

Mike Bainbridge did a special 915 for my Lola to get me up a hill with one fewer gearchange and better top speed in 4th, took time out of my hill climbs and better trophies on my shelves!

Some trick stuff in there but has paid dividends over the years. :)
You will feel the same I think D.

I need to stop reading this as it’s now making me have second thoughts with my plans. It certainly makes for an exciting gearbox.....

Today was a good day :) ....

...the car has been with Barry for the past couple of weeks which has been pretty intense and stressful, especially for Barry, however he sent me a couple of glorious pics first thing to cheer me up. More of this in a bit.

Secondly a parcel arrived unexpectedly from Germany :)

Although an RS build we're going with an RSR spec engine; one of the many difference of the engines was an increase in compression ratio from 9.8:1 to 10.3:1 and with these high compression pistons along with twin-plugging, an uprated pump and finally slide throttle bodies the engine finally achieved an output of 330HP.....initially the 3.0 race engines were a slight disappointment with only 308HP. Previously all Porsche racing engines had achieved an output of 110HP per litre and it was only now that the racing department hit that target......

.....now finding racing 95mm high compression barrels and pistons is extremely difficult, I had a couple of choices including re-plating my current, not perfect, cylinders along with a few choices of different pistons but I wanted to stick with new Mahle kit and glad I did 8) .....

Image

....apologies, lots of posts of gathering stuff which I know has little to do with restoration but it's all required to reach the end goal.....

....secondly I met up briefly with another serial early Porsche restorer to collect some original black anodised door frames, quarter trims and door handles which have aged and faded with time....

....like minded, he thought I might appreciate some originality rather than going down the black powder coat route often used.....

Image

....gorgeous in my opinion 8)

....back to Mr Carter....

....a few weeks back my rear quarters looked like this.....

Image

....cool but the self tapers spoil the line......then more metal was cut away....

....and then Barry sent this earlier 8) .....

...as for the stress and angst! :? ....

Awesome Darren. That’s the money shot :)

What did you do with the front arches in the end?
