Off-topic a little but aimed at those here who may have some experience polishing watch glass - What abrasive should I use to polish two of my windscreens? There seems to be something going on with the surface making one of them hold more water than it should and there are some relatively shallow wiper scratches on the other.

It seems i can take it as a given that cerium oxide will be the final polishing abrasive, but what about something slightly coarser? Is a reasonable to attempt to polish out the deeper scratches with fine pumice first and then follow up with cerium oxide? I'm aware I may be polishing for a good few hours, need to keep heat down, etc.

You can use all sorts of things but can't go wrong with a bit of Polywatch

Do any of you have a view on Panerai. The more I see them, the more they grow on me. They are big, so I’m not sure my wrist is big enough. I’m going to see a 44mm Luminor Marina tomorrow, just to check the size. They do various sizes, but the shop only has the 44mm in stock.

I like them a lot, but they are big watches and definitely make a statement. I’ve always fancied the 8day gmt PAM 233

At one point they were a very highly thought of manufacturer of decent mid/high range watches. But over the last 10-15 years they’ve pretty much destroyed all their reputations by being caught out lieing in all sorts of scenarios. All the vintage Panerai collectors dumped them on mass and their reputation is pretty much dead in watch collecting circles.

Putting cheap ETA movements in their high end watches and pretending they were Panerai ones 10+ years ago was the start of it…

Out of interest, today at Berrys in Newcastle they had a selection Panerai in the window with discounted / sale prices showing

Thanks for your posts guys. That’s a very interesting article Jason, I knew a little about the movements, but didn’t realise it had had such a detrimental effect on their overall reputation.
I’ll still go for a look to test the size, but need I need to give this more thought.

I went to see the watch this afternoon. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was way too big for my wrist. It’s the biggest watch I’ve ever tried on.

They are massive. But I like the individuality of the graphics and case and something about them being Italian (sort of) and a bit alternative means I still like wearing my Luminor. I think of them as a bit less ‘watch w&nker of the web’ than ‘collectible’ stuff but less celeb-in-GQ than a TAG or Omega.

As Jason says, each to their own.
