I do have elegantly dainty wrists. Thanks for noticing. I kinda fancy the bigness as a thing but you’re right - I’ll try before I buy.

I guess Rolexes are the safest place to put money, but there isn’t really one I like and I fancy something a bit alternative.

Anyone have thoughts on Bremont in terms of reliability and resale? I know both brothers who own the company to be classic Porsche fans so it has an appeal as a brand.

Personally there are 100s of brands I’d look at before Bremont and even then I wouldn’t

I shall measure them and report back. To be clear - they’re lean and sinewed rather than scrawny and girl-like. Like Flea in his prime.

I had a Pepsi GMT master a while ago that I liked, but mainly because strangers used to coo over it which stoked my ego. I couldn’t wear it now.

I had a 39mm IWC Pilot (not the chrono) on a NATO type strap that I loved. That’s probably my favourite ever watch to wear at work or at a funeral or down the pub. I’d kinda like another but equally feel going back is a missed opportunity.

I have a Hamilton American Classic that I like for when I want to feel a bit formal but not too fancy, I always feel pif putting that on with a shirt.

I bought a Mont Blanc Timewalker Urban when a bit tipsy at Malaga airport once and liked wearing that. It got nicked though.

I also like my Braun AW10. I’m well into Braun in general and think it’s a lovely simple little thing.

Sounds like a fun project.
I think Panerai watches look great but find the volume of ‘limited number’ issues off putting. False scarcity which I fears leads to difficulties to recoup if you need to sell. They do smaller diameter versions so not all clunking in the wrist. Plain, sandwich dial no date or seconds subdial would be my vote.
At your budget, reflecting that you liked your IWC before plus wanting flexibility to sell easily & ideally with appreciation I’d go for a ex military IWC type X or type XI. Look great but subtle, robust for daily use & not too large.
Another financially sensible decision would be 70s or earlier (non quartz) Cartier Tank or IWC Reverso (the original sports watch?).
Also consider ex military Sinn or Heuer bund watch. Look great & limited numbers so easy to sell well. Or JLC Polaris to IWC Galapagos.

Following along with interest as I am also contemplating a proper watch in 2021 at a similar budget. The trouble is that I don't know anything about watches at all which makes me think I'm not even qualified to own a nice one! I also have very "delicate" wrists so can't really do a big watch.

I did previously have a Breitling navitimer which I quite liked, but in the end I sold it as it was big and I couldn't read it!! I'm also tempted by an older watch, I don't know why! As an example, this appeals...

Do t forget to look at the Omega speedmaster ... very classy understated watch . Older weren’t waterproof and were handwind if that matters

Sam a couple of points. New will go down in value the moment you buy it but you know that. If you want to wear daily then it's also hard for a watch to hold it value. It hard not to bash and scratch it. I must admit I've cooled a bit on watch recently because it hard to pick a different one just to wear around the house. However, Thomas has some nice Heuer Autavias in your price range.
