Off topic watch chat for the horologists out there

This topic has been quiet for a while... I'm in HK at the moment and I'm a Rolex fan. I've never seen so many Rolex shops in one place - you can literally go from one to another to another!. Which is exactly what I did - asking the same question.. "got any sports watches?"

I really fancy a Rootbeer GMT - but I don't like the old ones because I don't like the president bracelet. so I've been on the hunt... and a long hunt it was.

out of the 30-40 Rolex shops I went into, the best I could find were mainly the ultra expensive, white gold Daytona with the blue face ( very nice ) - a full gold GMT with a green face ( also very nice ) and a load of the new yacht masters -( doesn't flick my switch ) - not one standard GMT or stainless Steel Sports watch.

of course, finding what you want is easy - plenty of places with SS Daytona's, GMT's, (Pepsi and Batman ) and a load of other brand new, watches... sadly all with a significant premium. - ie 14k for the rooter, 18k for the Panda Daytona...


its a shame isn't it, that Rolex ( who control the sale of their watches, I understand ) can't control the grey market. and for me, I struggle to pay more for something that someone else has just flipped. - that said, when discussing this exact issue with a watch seller, his view was that by the time you get one at list price, the list price will be what you can buy it for today...

anyway - Rolex HK can go do one, I'm defeated.

I quite like the new root beer gmt.. but I’m just not a two tone watch man . The new Pepsi is a fantastic watch though ... jubilee makes it wear very differently to the other Rolex sports

I presume you mean you don’t like the ‘jubilee’ bracelet and not president bracelet (which only came on Day Dates) ?

Back in 1980 I was very happy with the recommended retail price of a brand new Submariner in Hong Kong.......

Both wartime German Pilot watches. Single pusher is early (1942 or 43, i dont remember), twin pusher is later (1944)


For a Porsche connection, the post war version of the twin pusher, the Hanhart 417/ES was famously worn by Steve McQueen as his personal watch (not the Heuer Le Mans which he wore only for the film.....)

Wanted, daily beater, robust, clear, waterproof classic style watch. I want to spanner, build, swim & ski wearing it. Don't want something precious. Well under £75 please. Secondhand or new. I've been looking at MWC on Ebay......I like old stuff, and plain stuff.

I've got one of those. Simple and does all that you want. I thought they were a little more than £75 but ...

Update: £45 on ebay, previously worn a bit but not much, new hostile conditions daily beater: very pleased......

For Sale 1957 Enicar Sherpa
So ladies, I have for sale a genuine wolf in sheep's clothing. This watch appears to be an elegant Swiss 1950s everyday /dress watch, but the diver style high dome acrylic crystal hints at something exceptional.



Flip it over and the 14 facet bayonet release Brevet 314962 confirms that the watch is an early Enicar Super Compressor, cased by the highly regarded Swiss case maker EPSA. In its day this s/steel watch was waterproof tested to 600ft. The inside caseback dates the watch to December 1957. How many 1950s diver watches have you seen sporting 'turtle' lugs ? The cross hatched ' Saturn logo ' crown confirms its status as a divers watch. The movement is Enicar's 'in house' manual wind AR 1010 and was accredited chronometer status by the Neauchatel Observatory.
It features Incabloc shock protection.The dial features typical 50s slim 'Dauphine' watch hands and heavily applied logo and silver indices. The photo's give the impression that the untouched original dial is white or cream but it is in fact silver with a slight hint of Champagne.
Watches in the 1950s were more modestly sized and this Sherpa measures 35mm not including the crown. Back in the day these watches were promoted by Ken Rosewell, Jeff Duke, Stirling Moss and later Sherpa chronographs by Innes Ireland and Jim Clark. So there you have it. A beautiful boxed Swiss Super Compressor chronometer that hasn't been polished to death or redialled and in excellent working order. One of the earliest of the Enicar Sherpa line.
