Thanks, now out. Someone has been there before as it just had normal screws holding it in, so 5 minutes rather than 30!

Cracking stuff Gary. You won't regret it - well you will at certain times - but a lot of times will feel great and it will be an awesome sense of achievement. Is your lad going to help?

Cheers Mark, My lad is already helping taking stuff apart, did both doors for me with a little supervision. He’s just really worried about damaging stuff, probably not helped by me saying ‘careful with that it’s irreplaceable’

After leaving my daughter to remove the brakes on her mini I was horrified to find a big puddle of brake fluid everywhere so ordered new calipers. Then found she'd dismantled the calipers as well - hence the fluid. To be fair I did say 'undo every nut and bolt you can see'

I trace my love of cars back to when my father had a couple of used car plots selling old Cortinas and the like

I’d spend much of the summer holidays cleaning them, helping with little jobs and playing the needy son who required pops to sell a car to put the next meal in the table

Great to pass on the skills though. I recently came home from work expecting to help my 16 year old to replace the power steering unit on a VW Polo he is fixing up only to find he had done it all on his own. Felt proud and redundant at the same time

Grabbed an hour today amongst the GCSE results day stress to pull a few more bits off the dash. It takes forever working out how it all comes off without damaging it. Much of it hasn’t moved since Klaus assembled it back in the day which is pretty much 47 years to the day.

The deeper I go the greener it gets. You can see that everything starts off green then the visible edges are blown over with satin black. I’ll be replicating this even though it looks a mess!







The wiring has suffered (mainly at my hand!) for heated screens, phone chargers, amps etc so I’m going to remove all of that and make an overlay harness just for the new stuff keeping the original neat and tidy.

I’m going to fit a more modern style blade fuse box though as the masochist use of corroding loose bullet fuses isn’t something that needs to continue!

Is the yellow crayon number still visible on the dash top Garry?

The ash tray light is often forgotten on restos.

It’s still there, but unfortunately I sprayed paint over most of it during it’s previous respray! I didn’t know of these things then
