72 Hotrod - my new project

En route to Wales earlier today

am just about to get my car back from Tuthills after having the snagging list done (fiddly stuff...nothing too serious)

unfortunately their book keeping process has sprung into life and I now have the final bill

partly as I was a bit light on detail compared to some other threads - and partly to show other potential restorers quite how involved this can be... here is the list of parts used that comes to £18k

note this is parts, not labour, and is ex vat

and is AFTER getting the shell to boxfresh condition (with many £ of new panels never mind labour and paint)

and doesnt include seats or wheels which I sourced myself

or anything used in the 911/83 engine rebuild 2 years ago OR the 915 gearbox rebuild

of course it can be done cheaper but if you want perfection (which for me was a usable day to day 72 high performance hotrod to my spec with everything refurbed or replaced) it doesnt come cheap.

Well, there are other ways of approaching a project. A Singer or Tuthill hotrod is a fantastic thing, but many DDK members on here have been able to build interesting and satisfying cars with budgets that are very different to Dan's.

I don't want to frighten myself with a build cost spreadsheet, but my 73.5 T project with a few nice bits will come in at less than you might expect.

That'll be a pair of chrome door handles and lock set. They are pricey from Porsche.
The headlamps will be for complete lamps.
Nothing untoward in those prices I'd say.
I'm familiar with a list like that, it's expensive to restore a Porsche properly.

It's expensive buying new parts from Porsche.
That isn't necessarily the only way to restore a Porsche properly!
For example new Porsche headlight reflectors are made in Czech Republic not Germany like the originals.

There are many ways of owning or doing an early 911 and they are all valid. If I'd had a different budget I certainly would have gone down a different road and that would have been fine. Thankfully I made some tax free profits in wine in 2010/11

I just posted the list because I know how easy it is to forget / gloss over a lot of fiddly parts when you think about budgets. I only paid 6k for the car so I was happy to buy lots of new kit. But agree with Paul most project prices are bonkers now

It come down to how a car is done to personal choice.

Several absolute 100% cars on here and this shows on the bottom line.

Not all can go this financial route, some can and do and great to see the difference in cost to 'pro' build v 'DIY' build.

some of us love the DIY bit, less of a result in comparison maybe, but both loved to death which is all that counts.

I could not stand to do to Tuthill's for past reasons, but a pro built car must be superb to have and hard to be nervous of (in my mind) until the first scar appears.

Hat's off to those how do a Barry Shell and a big mechanical build replacing all potential worn parts.

Over the 26 years I've 'DIY'd' my 73T it has cost me about £25K inc the £3K to buy the wreck, expensive in '88, but a pair of Porsche rear wings were just over £500 then....
