The job for today was to adjust a very slight wobble on the LH front wheel bearing.

That was easy enough. So I thought I’d touch up the underseal whilst it was up...

However it appears to be a little late for that!


This is (was!) the front lower corner of the inner sill/bottom of A post.

That’s the next two years of my life and wallet gone then.

I’ve been putting it off for many years but the time has finally come to take it back to a shell properly and not do half a job. Not just yet though as it still needs to take me to Classic Le Mans!

My silver cars last road trip was to Classic Le Mans before the restoration. I went through a similar process although it was my cill that had turned to iron oxide.

Judging by your previous work you’re well up to this Gary - it’ll feel good to know it’s been done properly.

Can you patch that bit in the meantime or is it not worth it?

I’ve patched it... with some ali tape and underseal, primarily to keep the water out!

No point putting any effort in as once back from Le Mans (+maybe a few weeks of summer) it’s coming apart.

My own sheet metal skills are just ok, but I aspire to a standard I rarely achieve!

I’ll probably get the shell dipped, and just hope there is something left when it comes out...

Practice and patience. The latter especially has got me a long way with mine. We've seen bit you've done in the past, you'll do a great job.

Can’t you get some Bentley master craftsman and a bunch of apprentice’s to sort that for you.

The car is still in one piece covered in Le Mans dust unaware of what is about to happen...


I’m about to place an order with Restoration Design which I think has ended up almost as ‘select all’ from the 911 parts list...

And I’ve not bought the 1/4s yet...

It would be nice to think the next time it gathers (road!) dust would be 2020 CLM.

But I have a feeling it may miss that, as other than a visit to a Celette jig part way through I’m doing everything, learning as I go.

I may regret starting this!

I can't believe how long it's taken me to be honest Gary and I've had the opportunity to work on mine a lot more than just weekends and the odd evening. Initially I wanted mine for CLM this year and here I am still without any paint on the car, although that's going to change very soon!


'Oh well while I'm here' has cost me both a lot of time and also money. However no regrets and I'm on target to have the car on the road for the beginning of next season.

Will be a great rebuild to follow - all the money, sweat and injuries will be worth it when a gleaming Viper car rolls under it's own power for eh first time

Mike, Hopefully just rear 1/4s and B-Post assemblies. Nick recommended Porsche OE, so that's probably where I'll end up, but I've just run out of money!
