Glad your not selling the 911.....as you really should have put the roof back in and painted it original viper if you were!!

Selling the boxster seems more sensible as it's given you some headaches with that smoking issue so not sure you'd miss it as much......

As ever, your comments are perceptive!
The 911 is just my car, quirky things and all, really done when they were £3000 cars which seemed expensive to me in '89. I was used to triumphs and MGB's then.
The rhd conversion is the real toxic feature, but that was in '92, 27 years ago.

The Boxster has started cold 8 times now smoke free, still very early days.
By chance parked next to an 05 plate AMG SL coupe, silver and tatty today in the village.

Parked and walked away and looked back.
The Boxster caught my eye more than the SL...

It is a quandary, but the Boxster is a fun car and so will be the next car, but the fun has petered out a lot with this white smoke issue.

Boxster are fantastic cars and the smoking is what they do, mine did it, just not as often. Just been off to see my accountant with the roof down in light rain today. Can’t beat it.

Tricky to find a car as fitting the bill of a modern practical quick enough easy to repair sports car as the Boxster, so you winning a bet is so far good.
However, I do not like the idea of selling it with this smoke problem and not telling the buyer who will offer 2p for it or run away.

I have yet to see a 987.2 Box or Cayman do it and with literally hundreds at events I've been to I would have thought I would have seen one 'do-it'.

If it seems to have been fixed with this latest AOS so be it, I'll save the money and rebuild the Lola 3.2 engine this winter with an easy mind.
Feel a bit trapped by this car, but the bloody thing runs so very well it is like a new car.

Do the 981 Boxsters do the smoke thing Ashley? Upgrading to a 981 of course would fix everything. Only just dawned on me typing this and reminded by Ashley he has had both... :)

Graham,

sounds like you really like the Boxster other than the 'smoke machine option'.

We've had a 981 2.7 for over a year and have never once seen it smoke at startup.
Whereas my 997 Gen2 C4S would occasionally smoke at startup but only a handful of times a year over the four years I had it. So maybe a 9x7 'feature'.

981s are really great cars and a big improvement over the 987s ( other than the electronic handbrake ).
There are some really nice cars in the low £20Ks out there, so don't rule one out.

All the best
Andrew

Yes, the Boxster as a package is very good for me and Mrs 911. She likes the 987 but understands my frustration with this smoke issue (that might be fixed).
The 987 is not a good design in several details, silly issues like corroding exhaust studs on what was an expensive car where her Toyota and Hondas run faultless for 20% of the new price of the Porsche.

My thoughts were not to rush out and change the cars.
I thought I would have to sell the 911 to have enough to move forward, and I've had 3 interested in the car at £35K as a result of this thread, but the 987 is the sacrificial car.
I think most who have had them realise how good the package is, but flawed, and for me it is the stupid white smoke issue that spoils it greatly.

There is also little confirmed reason why the cars can do this esp if the smoke is regular.
It had become regular (3 times in a row a few weeks ago) but after a new AOS 12 months back it disappeared then progressively returned.

Caymans are similarly affected.

I'm not sure yet if the 981 engine is the same as the 987.2, the AM1 design (I think) in which case the 981 will have the same problem!

It has till Xmas to be smoke free.
