I'm no expert but backfiring on lift off is usually indicative of a leak in the exhaust system somewhere.

Is the backfire a recent feature ?

Yes just started recently. Was helped a bit by me playing with carbs and dwell. I will do a full service to be sure

I suspected dwell angle out so that is where I went first but not the answer my next guess is a blocked idle jet but best to do a full tune
