Having applied to DVLA to register the car, they have finally responded and are now asking me to arrange an SGS inspection which could be held at my home.

Bearing in mind the car has been checked through customs/HRMC and had an MOT, what is this about?

Anyone experienced this inspection, anything I should be aware of and any clues about cost?

Hi Martin,
I had the same thing with a car I brought in from the states last year.
There was some confusion, as mine had been registered on the tittle with the engine number, rather than the vin, which was common practice in California in the 50's. It even states on the title engine or vin number.
The inspection is basically to make sure the car is what it says it is on the paperwork, nothing to worry about, especially if the car still has its original engine.
There is no charge for the inspection.

The main thing the inspector is checking is the chassis number, and this has to still be stamped into the shell. This has caused no end of problems for the old ford crowd, as the chassis number on old fords is stamped into the strut top plate, and they usually rusted out years ago.

Just to confirm that the inspection by DVLA is to check that the info submitted already to HMRC is correct . They checked chassis number and engine number on my '55 car imported from Australia and needed a clearance of 2 metres all around the car to take pictures of it. No charge but my inspector started off from Wales and got to me in London about 2 hours later than planned .

Wednesdays DVLA inspection went very smoothly and as suggested the only interest was VIN, engine number and photographs to demonstrate originality, all over within 30 minutes so now just a waiting game.

Hi, I used www.classicplatesonline.co.uk for my self adhesive one, but i think they do aluminium ones too. Excellent service, highly recommended. There have been quite a number of threads on here about style/size over the years......

Hi,

Most of the seals on the car (door, windows, bonnet etc) need replacing so any supplier recommendations or should I stick with Porsche OEM parts assuming they are still available?

Proceed with caution, i bought Porsche, most were ok but had terrible fight with door seals. In the end the wonderful PRS team supplied correct ones where Porsche had them wrong. I regretted not talking to PRS before going to Porsche. I would have bought the complete set from PRS had i known earlier! W

Are 356a RHD windscreen wipers and blades still available?

You car looks very nice. Wiper arms and blades some are available some not. Depends on the year of your 356A. My 59 RHD has the hook version. But... the arm has a kink in it that has to suit a LHD or RHD car. The wipers end up on my RHD car parked to the right of the screen. The wiper blades are available to to suit either LHD or RHD arms. But RHD arms I don't think are possible unless you modify LHD ones.

Best bet would be to ask PRS again like you did for the seals.

I know Roger Bray Restoration holds stock on these items likewise Stoddard in the States but they don't define RHD or LHD. Thats why Mike Smith or son should advise and hopefully supply you.

I have a LHD arm which if ever I needed it that I could alter the angle of the kink so it fits.
