That's a lot of hard work.
I thought you might have used Nitromores etc to get most off.
Keep it coming, love a real DIY restoration.

It isnt what it used to be.Due to EU law,nitromors had some nasty chemicals in it(No kidding) It was deemed unsafe, and they had to alter the formula.Unfortunately the "nasty" stuff, was the stuff that removed the paint!
I tried some few months back.Even the familar odour has changed.Plus it barely touched the paint.I changed to Starchem on the advice of my paint shop.Not perfect but an improvment.

Indeed, that was why l asked what you had used.
My last Nitromores tin was useless a few months back.
I have tried a tin of something from my local car paint shop which smells like Nitro of old, but is not much better!

what have i done!....there's nothing subtle about that colour



plenty of orange peel and a few runs



will take quite a bit of work to get to an acceptable standard

started work on front lid....no rust at all but some odd dents under what i thought was original paint



however, the cavity at the front of the lid is filled with expanded foam....was this factory?....even if it was, i dont want it there.....any ideas on extracting it??

decided to flat it all back and do it again....much better result this time.....even got a glass-like finish in some areas straight out of the gun

meanwhile sorted the front lid, it had loads of filler/primer on it....a good coating of zinc phosphate to etch, then filler, then epoxy primer



had to cut large slots in underside at front to get the expanded foam out...pity, but no way was i leaving it there

just the 2 front wings to sort, whilst i wait for the shell paint to harden

Too late now but I'm sure there is a chemical antidote to expanding foam refered to as gun cleaner it melts the stuff. brilliant job with the resto and very sensible stashing away those original seats and maybe anything alse you can run without, the price of early parts is just crazy, I've left buying tail lights far too late and am looking at £400 per side eek! man when I started my weldathon 15 years or more ago things like lights etc were affordable now I'm looking at something homemade. hee hee gonna look great.

yes , should have thought of that, Milo...never mind, now got plenty of access holes for rustproofing!

anyway, have repainted shell and flatted with 1200 and 1500 grit and polished with G3 and G10 by hand, really pleased with the results, i didn't want a modern glossy look, but an "older" cellulose look



and that suits my amateurish efforts.....but, virtually no orange peel, no runs etc, just a few imperfections, inevitable for the conditions i'm spraying in

I painted my car in cellulose 26 years ago and it looks exactly like that finish now fwiw.
It is a really mellow look, looks old but not too old!

onto wings, the left one had rot in the bowl, petrol fill housing, mounting flange and bottom double skinned areas









then tidied up those welds...that all took a bloody long time

its important to clear out the double skinned area (use thin blade etc), give it a whack to dislodge any loose rust, and ttreat by trickling rust converter into the area (i use fe 123)...all joints butt welded if mid panel







its a pain, but i'm going to have to trial fit the doors and wings, in case i've got the curves all wrong....i made lots of cardboard templates, but better safe than sorry

got the loose bits (bumpers etc) back from the blasters....needless to say, they didnt do what i asked and leave the items unpainted



so, more paint removal...gave up after a while and will paint on top of their etch primer

i have painted the backs of the bumpers with 2 good coats of Epoxy Mastic, including all the edges that get damaged...that way i can get into all the awkward places sprayed coats don't reach

Recently, love tried to find repair panels for the bottom of the front wings.
I did what you have done some years ago and would like to re do them, but strange nobody makes the area even though they make whole wings.
Obviously not wise to give someone a reason not to buy a wing!

This guy does make a repair panel, but the fit is not impressive
