Quite common on early change over engines but would have to check dates 5R cases were introduced .....I have a spare 2.4E engine I purchased that has 5R/7R cases.

If you are worried whether they are the correct pair, The two case halves are stamped with a number on each half, on a web on the top seam. These should match.

Another chapter starting today. Rolling shell left for body restoration this morning. I've ordered a pile of panels from Porsche and number of non Porsche items from design911.

A couple of extra areas of rot came to light, rot extends into dash panel from the screen corners and a small patch in the heel panel at the rear.

Next up to get a bit more organised on storing the stripped parts as its been quite a focused tear down. Split the engine and gearbox. Have another chat with Lee at Octane garage on stripping engine and advising rebuild requirements. Send off a few bits to be reconditioned, brake calipers (Classic Car Automotive) , drive shafts (probably Canford Classics) etc.

Thanks,
Mark

It'a nice to take a small step forward. With pieces everywhere it great to put these on the shelf for next year. Good job by Classic Car Automotive.

Now need to work on my logistics to get engine and gearbox to Lee at Octane Garage.

I've had a productive weekend.

Engine and gearbox dropped off to Lee at Octane garage. I'm looking forward to hearing what he finds lurking in that engine, its obvious that its been apart before.
Image

I also dropped in on Conrad who is working on the body. We have a windscreen cowl problem to solve. Ideally it needs a replacement panel so that rot in the dash support and windscreen frame can be repaired properly (i didnt get a good photo). Do any of you have any suggestions? A new frame is a rather steep £2200 at least, that money could be better spent elsewhere. Ideally I need nos cowl panel or a shell that is being cut for parts. I'll post a wanted on that but i'm not hopeful.

Another small step and on the shelf, starter refurbished and back from my local auto electric engineer.

Off to see the shell in the morning, pictures to follow.

Ok, here are a few shot of the ongoing bodywork.

Front lip and nose of inner wings done.

Image

Image

Windscreen pillars are a bit nasty. Rot extends to the inner dash. This is why I was looking for a scuttle, repair will now be done with the repair panels.

Image

Image

Image

Inner wing support welded on. Sills outer and inner will be kept on both sides. Car was rustproofed in the lower areas, holes plugs and sticky residue found. Shame about the higher areas! One kidney bowl done.

Image

Image

Image

Other side being prepped for its kindey bowl, small patch required.

Image

Both rear quarters cut off, inner wings in good shape. lower rear window frame repairs required, new parcel shelf and support panel, plus repairs to nearside c pillar to come. Parcel shelf cut out, localised repairs needed before new shelf goes in.

Still a long way to go but the patient is in the operating theatre and will have a long life to follow.

Hi all,
It's bee a while since the last update. Lee at Octane Garage has finished the gearbox rebuild, he's now pulling the engine apart to assess. More on that as I get it but I really like the way the Ragamuffin / Sepia Reaper engine was done. Need to price that up to see if I could go that route.

Bodywork is continuing, suspension is coming off and I will need to refresh the suspension in a number of areas. A couple of questions for you if I may.

Shock absorber's, I have Boge struts. I'm looking for a taught, sporty, precise, fast road setup. Are Bilstein sports the obvious choice, I assume the club sports are too harsh for road use? Any other suggestions?

Secondly my car never had anti roll bars, i'd like to fit them, again any advice on where to source, size?

Here's a couple more body photos and some gearbox internals.

Thanks,
Mark

I have limited experience and others may be better qualified to comment however I would always be inclined not to over think things and go the way Porsche intended and remember it's not any one thing but a combination that adds to feel.

My 2.4E handles fantastically on Koni Classics with 15mm front and rear ARB's, never been completely happy with the Superpro bushes so will be switching to standard Porsche rubber sometime soon. Ultimately though I think it's a little soft.

My modified T is a fair bit sharper on twisty B-roads but still easy to live with and the feel is sublime - pretty simple on Koni Sports with 18mm front and 24mm rear torsion bars, 15mm and 16mm front and rear ARB's and standard rubber bushing all round........this all works pretty well.

Cheers,

Thanks for coming back so quickly Darren, I'm with you in keeping it fairly Porsche, just after that sharp feel.
