The day before a trip such as this, sensible people might have a slow day, focussing on preparing for the 9 consecutive days of driving ahead, and getting plenty of rest.
Not Captain Sensible, me. Today was round 2 of the Buckmore 6 Hrs champs, and I've just got home, battered and bruised from a long day's kart racing.
It was worth it: the team finished 6th, maintaining our 5th place ranking in this year's championship
However, I'm definitely going to need a Radox bath and an early night to try and be fresh for tomorrow... As tomorrow is D(eparture) Day!
The petrol situation in France has deteriorated, so we've made a last minute change of plan for the route:
We will now drive via Spa, south through Germany, over the Gotthard Pass, then down through Italy to the coast and our ferry to Palermo.

We clocked 420 miles and 4 border crossings today, from London to Freyming-Merlbach, collecting Johnny at Spa en route.
The weather has not been kind on day one: 300miles of the drive looked like the below, although I'm going faster in this shot than we were for most of the way around Brussels..,
However we did get about 40 miles bone dry at sunset, just as we crossed into Germany and joined the unrestricted Autobahn
Up early tomorrow, hoping the weather clears for the Gotthard Pass...

Thanks for the petrol heads-up.
We are changing our route today following the same SPA route/Belgium/Germany into Switzerland.
What is France doing to itself?

Much much better weather today.
We made very swift progress to the Swiss border:
Then threaded up and up into the Alps, through about 20 tunnels, with the windows down...
And we are currently eating Apfelstrudel half way up the Gotthard Pass:

Just to keep Graham happy we are averaging 25.2mpg in the RS at an average 65mph. Not Boxster but not bad

Changed our French first-stopper to Belgium this morning so following almost your first leg next week.
I'd die for such a road trip and to get a pic of the classic outside such a place, it will be a great memory, good you will bring it to us here!
I won't annoy anyone anymore as to the mpg from the 250 bhp 2.9 flat six I got today...but my '73T/3.2 gets 32 mpg.
Trust the next days will be superb, look forward to reading all about it.
Picture heavy please.

Arrived safe and well in Genoa. Neither car missed a beat. Loads of pictures taken and will upload when I get a good wifi.
