How ? What's the approved method ? Can you butt weld them or do you use an overlapping joint ?

I loved the Kumhos but they only lasted me a year of spirited driving. When I came to needing new ones I went for Yoko Advans and would highly recommend them too. As grippy as the Kumhos but last a lot longer, good on track too and a lot cheaper.

Well done James, great news.

I have run and do run Kumhos and Toyos on the 14 and the Boxster and have been very pleased - Moggy's note on the wear rate is true of the Kumhos but they are super grippy.

The rules are changing on track focused tyres due to a new EU directive, and the MSA have created a new list 1C. This means that some existing 1B tyres, like those above, will no longer be E marked, and therefore not road legal. I am not fully up to speed with the changes as all my sets are nearly new and e-marked, but I think the changes will hit the market in April or so. Therefore if shelling out £800 per so on tyres, make sure the supplier confirms they are e-marked.

I had the Yoko's on at this very wet track day up at Anglesey last year. The video doesn't do it justice, it was VERY wet. Watch it from 11mins onwards as this was my first session out that day so the first few laps are pretty tip-toe then I got stuck behind a load of M3's for ages that simply wouldn't allow me passed in a gentlemanly manner, so at 11.20 I get a little bit more aggressive and muscle my way past after a little of side-ways action coming out of the start/finish straight corner. Then I start having some fun trying to keep up with a Radical, which then promptly spins out shortly after getting past me. I was going to try to stay with him at 12.42 but thought I'd stay behind the 911 and see how I compared, which I immediately regretted as he was 'driving miss daisy' in the corners, then matching my acceleration in the straights so was a PITA to get past (but no where near as bad as thoser BMW drivers ). But back to the tyres.... they were very good in the wet and over the course of the day they really gave me confidence to lean on them more and more. I can't remember having the same confidence with the Kumho's in those extreme wet conditions. Notice how I'm able to take more speed around the corners and get the power on earlier compared to the 911 thing (sorry but I'm not a 911 guy and have no idea what model it is). He had Toyos on (Proxes I think - from memory).

Yoko AO32Rs or Toyo Proxes are both as good as each other in my opinion, though the latter cheaper and with more size options.
I think the former were OE on Lotus Exiges, and with 225/50 x15 and 205/50 X 15 sizes they were perfect for a 7&8 rim combo. Both gave deep slashes so will disburse water.

The Kumho has a more traditional tread pattern but it only comes with about 3 or 4 MM. of depth so does not get rid of much water in standing water. However, in damp conditions I find them better because I run the super soft compound that you can stick your finger nail in - this means they stick like wot sit to a blanket, even in the damp.

On the 914 I have a Yoko / Toyo mix by axle due only to availability issues at the time - I use these for track days or long road trips. I also have a set of Kumhos for sprinting, and these overheat by your 2nd flying lap on a circuit. For hills and normal road use they are awesome.

For the Boxster I went to a set of Toyos, as I wanted a solid all rounder to benchmark performance on the new car. They suit the car well, and based on it's performance on standard suspension I would think the advantage of a Kumho is fairly limited. I may try a set in 2017 when I have modded the suspension and do some back to back tests, but I need another set of rims to do that.

If I were you I would get medium compound Toyo or Yokos in the above sizes, as these will be up to track days and long European tours with sensible wear rates.
