There were a few more areas of concern. The Dash - I had ( having never done this before ) no idea that the dash would be so rusty underneath the leather cover but, as you can see pretty messy!









so - ultimately - it needed to go off to the powder coaters - get the rust removed and then hopefully get it fitted back in the car all clean and spangly.

so, from the above to the below.





nice to see that it came up clean in the end.

quick interject at this point.

Basically I'm a newbie to this kind of thing. I restored a beetle when I was in my late teens, but looking back, I didnt really restore the car, I had it resprayed and then modified it. - so when you're taking on a project you need to have some understanding of the size of the problem as it very quickly gets out of control.

so, - out of control restorations.... need to be brought back under control. and this for me has been achieved through trust. Working with Garry has been really easy. Any issues that have unfolded, there's been gentle dicussion around the right steps to take. In cases where there's a no brainer decision, this has been taken by Garry - because I'm happy for him to make the decision. ( powder coating of the seat bases etc ) - but every step of the way I've been kept informed.

Its a nice change from earlier on in the project - where the bodywork was being done, I just didnt feel as if I was involved in any of it - except the paying of the bills. but more importantly I was just a paying customer. With the interior I feel like its a partnership - and because of this, I'm getting back the love of my car that frankly I'd lost - and with it the excitement of the finished article.

so anyway - back to the car. I thought I'd give you a flavour of why I wanted to have the interior re-done. here's a couple of tasters - nice blue/grey leather/vinyl and grey carpet:







The actual interior wasn't in that bad condition to be fair. but it looked really tired and quite out of place of a newly painted car with a bloody great big yellow stripe down the front.!

so - what about this then?






and for a final taster: - a rather nicely done front seat.

Cognac leather (?), right up my street. Great job, Joe.

you and me both.. the current timeline for completion is around mid Feb... fingers crossed, although I'm in no real rush. - I just want the best possible job for the budget that I have.

ok - another update from Garry. back seats in place... I'm personally tickled pink. - the colour scheme has come out better than I had hoped.

bit more progress:

Looks great. From what I remember about coaxing the carpet into Mr 58As car, nothing actually fits from stock and there's a lot of steaming and poking and pushing required.

You couldn't be more correct fitting ribbed 356 carpets

I find heating the back of the carpet with a heat gun allows you to twist, pull, rotate while at the same using a small wallpaper roller to smooth the wrinkles and creases

Maybe I've found a botox replacement

its really coming together now.
