Just what I thought. Floor is to die for!
You are a brave man doing the under-wing stuff with the body all freshly painted!!

You're absolutely right

it is a little nerve-wracking - but I knew the condition of the underside i.e. no welding needed - and the upside is I can complete the build without sending it away again for paint
I have made some more progress recently.
I have now got the engine sorted - a 3.0 SC motor , rebuilt by Tuthills last year , with 3000 miles under it's belt , so nicely run in for me.
It has had all new bearings , 11.1:1 CR with JE pistons , twin-plugged , 964 profile cams , new valves and guides , race springs etc.
It has been set up on Bob Watson's rolling road , and was producing 235 hp , with a lovely flat torque curve , and that on CIS injection. I will be fitting a set of PMO's so should get a few more horses than that .
I have also decided to go with a 915 box , and thanks to davidppp - I now have the correct 914 output flanges to convert to the SWB driveshafts.
Body - wise , the mountings for the oil cooler pipes are now sorted.....
and the painting has started - though there is still much scraping to be done !!
Finally for now , I have had several conversations with Chuck Moreland at Elephant Racing , and the suspension should be winging it's way across the Atlantic shortly.

Hi Ian
I have been studying your excellent installation threads with interest - in fact they've been saved in my Favourites - should save me some time when I get to install mine - thanks!!
I've gone for full polybronze bearings front and rear , front and rear monoballs , hollow front and rear AR bars , Quick change spring plates, rear ARB mounts , 27mm rear T bars , front Von coilover shocks , with 19mm dropped spindles , and a 935 style front strut brace.

Thats a great set up for this car from Chuck. I , like Ian , have a full elephant set up and have to say with the recent restoration to the chassis of my car and these items now fitted and correctly set up , the handling is transformed - you will be very pleased.
Also had a car with similar engine set up , and again, thats going to make you smile (especially with one of Bens M & K exhausts !)
Great project by the way

Arn't all those metal-to-metal pivots just too hard core for UK pot holes?
I ran my 911 Hot Rod/hillclimber on hard nylon (still have that in the rear) and it was harsh on impacts with holes etc (but fab on track I must admit)
Solid joints will be ultra tight? (and damage sustained?)
Best of all though it all 'friction less' which cannot be said for poly bushes!

I also run elephant bushes front & rear ( have done since 2006) and love them

.... all road use, bumpy country roads etc .. even my wife finds the 911 comfortable

Thanks for that.
I expect to rebuild my 911 hotrod next year and remove all the suspension as it is long overdue. The bushes went in 60 K miles ago so will be a bit dry to say the least and worn, esp the rears.
I was going to replace them like-for-like but further mods are so tempting!

Running my elephants every day I find that relatively regular greasing is important. If I've done some 'spirited' driving (and by that I mean a track day or a week-end's (very) fast driving) then they start to creak afterwards. however re-greasing sorts this out.
Although it is metal to metal it's sliding against each other - not impacting against each other. it lets the shock absorber do all the shock absorbing instead of rubber bushes deforming first.
To me the noticeable change is in the first few millimetres of steering input - the slack (which I hadn't noticed before) is gone, and the car feels more precise because of it.

Mark,
I saw that engine for sale and did ask Tuthills about the build they had done, but in the end it was too expensive, so found my 2.7 MFI
What brakes are you going to be using ?
Target date for completion, as this is one to be seen when done.

Ian - looks as though you had an excellent (though turning out to be a little controversial

) deal ! That engine will be perfect for your car.
As for brakes , I will be fitting Aluminium 6 pot front , and 4 pot rears form Mark at RS911 , and a twin Master Cylinder conversion - not sure where from as yet - possibly Prepfab ? - any ideas / experience welcome.
As far as the completion date goes - the sooner the better

, but my absolute deadline is CLM 2010. The weekend fortuitously falls on a significant birthday for me (21

) , so we are plannig to extend the event with a bit of touring en France.
Anyway - this is my recent progress - gearbox cleaned up ,and 914 flanges fitted , alnmost finished the chassis prep work - and made a start on making the engine look a little more 'period'.
More soon I hope

Wow great job Mark. I'm glad my engine and box have gone into good hands. It will be a cracker when finished. Very much looking forward to it.
