The best choice for the 911 is the Fuchs Pro R 15w-50, which is a top end ester oil.

All of those have sufficiently high ZDDP contents (the Pro R and Comp 4 actually have far higher ZDDP content than traditional classic oils).

BMW are so fussy about their bike oils, but they also give out dodgy information. The engine is well and truly run in before 6k, so a synthetic oil would be preferable to give the best protection and make the engine last longer. Oh yeah, that's why they like you to use mineral oils

The Castrol ACT EVO, Motul 3000 the Silkolene V-Twin and Super 4 are all 100% mineral oil based, but the Silkolene Comp 4, Motul 7100, Amsoil and Redline are really good oils, much better choices than the mineral oils.

Hi Oilman,

What oils would you recommend for a 993 C4S, 3.2 Carrera , and 2.7MFI and 2.4 Carb, 2.2MFI engines 1600 356 ? I know from experience that light oils leak much more.
My cars can be idle for some time and should this be a consideration in the choice/grade ? A 45 gal drum I heard that Halfords oils are made by Mobil ?

I would use a 5w-40 or 10w-40 synthetic in the C4S and you will find those through the link below.

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS NT/CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives. As a budget choice, the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100 are good options.

In the others, I'd probably go for a 20w-50.

The best options are the Fuchs Pro R and Redline, then it's the Valvoline VR1 and Millers Classic Sport. The Millers Classic Performance, Motul Classic or Silkolene Silkolube are decent cheaper options.

I think it's Castrol that makes the Halfords oil, or it was anyway, it might be Mobil now, but it doesn't mean you're getting a decent oil for a fairly low price. It does mean that you might not be getting the same oil each time you buy it. Halfords (and all the other companies that offer own brand oils, as well as some that are thought of as oil companies) will approach a lot of companies and ask them to make an oil that meets some requirements, the companies will then come up with a basic blend that meets the minimum requirements as cheaply as possible. That means there is a reduction in the quality of the ingredients in the blend and therefore, a reduction in the quality of the oil. It's not like they are buying 100L as if that was the case, it would make sense for Castrol/Mobil/Shell/Fuchs etc to just re-label their own products, but as Halfords etc will be buying 10000L+, they will be making a new product for them.

996 GT3 best running on fully synthetic light oils ?

Oil quality is, to a degree, controlled by specs like ACEA and API, but specs don't tell the whole story. For example, Fuchs XTR 5w-30 is an ACEA A5/B5, but Motul 300V doesn't officially meet any specs, yet I know which one I'd go for, the 300V is a proper top end race quality oil.

Most newer Porsches are better off with a 5w-40 or 10w-40 as they flow well and there are a good selection of quality oils to pick from. Some cars might use a quite a lot of oil, especially if used on track, but 5w-40 or 10w-40 is the best option in my opinion.

What oil would you use for a 50,000 mile 2.7 in a '74 2.7 911 --- not S so should be 8.0 :1 compression ratio ?

I notice you don't mention Mobil 1 10-40w which seems to be standard in most classic cars, --- 964RS and 993RS including track work ( we use the 15-50 SuperSyn in racing)

The Mobil 10w-40 is okay for road use, but I wouldn't use it on track, a fully synthetic oil is a much better choice.

Personally I would go with a 10w-40 synthetic, an ester based one just like this one http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60120-gulf- ... 10w40.aspx engines like this were crying out for an oil of this quality when they left the factory line, but they were not available. The good thing about these ester based performance synthetics is they are also very good at looking after older engines, they have high ZDDP (more than a classic oil!) the ester content has many benefits as well as being electro stactically charged, this means the oil will always leave a protective layer, ideal for cars that sit in the garage much of the time. They are also very shear stable (resistance to breaking down), again handy in aircooled applications where the oil does a lot of cooling, that and synthetics do a better job allround. The enigne does not need an oil like this, but why not treat it to one anyway.

A specialist recommended mag case EP80 or 75-90 .
