As it is page 1 914 I thought we ought to have a nice 914 picture, so here we are. This is Paul Mankin and Peter Scott on this years Monte Carlo Historic Rally, car number 8 finishing in 187th place. No idea where on the route the picture was taken.

Went for a quick blast in the 911 before it got too hot then collected my Fulvia on the way back - interesting 'back to back' comparison ...

The Fulvia has:
- heavier steering (FWD) - more noticeable with the current 'period' Ferrero steering wheel
- a very long (but positive) gear change (4 spd)
- excellent grip/roadholding/handling (on Michelin XAS tyres*) & seems to take poor road surfaces in its stride
Overall it feels very light & airy with excellent all-round visibility - a great drive but a bit lacking in excitement ...
The 911 has:
- lighter steering
- a less precise gear change (but could probably be improved – need to investigate)
- excellent grip/roadholding/handling (on Continental Premium Contact 6 tyres) but is more affected by poor road surfaces (might be tired shock absorbers)
Compared to the Fulvia it feels more 'sporty' - possibly due to induction/exhaust noise (more apparent with the sunroof open)
* I think that the Michelin XAS is one of the best tyres ever made - the 'FF' version even more so (had those on my Giulietta Sprint when I first bought it).

Having rallied my HF1600 in Classic events that included All Out night navigation bashes, I would say that no 911 could keep up with one on a twisty back road. Fabulous traction, almost zero understeer and great suspension. We ran Michelin Alpin tyres as they have good grip on tar and gravel (we had to run Road tyres not competition samples).
