Thanks for all the responses - so where do you guys buy all your watches - Evilbay or are there other good sites?
What makes should I be on the look out for, etc. anyone know of a good guide on the net anywhere?
Also - if I doubled the budget to £500 - would that be more realistic to get a higher end watch?

A good source are the forums.
TZ and The Watch Forum.
People with a passion for watches advertise on them and sell at fair prices.
Yes, £500 would open the market.
It's more down to want you like. Divers? Sports? Dress? Gold? Silver? Automatic? Quartz? Vintage? New? etc.
It's a real personal thing so buy something you like that you'll be proud to pass on to you little one.

how about a seiko bullhead/speedtimer?.. they seem to still be on the fringes but i can imagine them increasing in value pretty soon. they've nearly doubled in the last couple of years!

This is my favourite watch and my 'daily driver'. I wear this more than any other.
It's a Carrera re-issue from 1999.
These early re-editions were a very accurate copy of the 1964 original.
The size is correct, the movement very high quality (the Lemania c.1861 as used in the Omega Speedmaster) and it was copied right down to even having a plastic 'glass'.
The dial is also identical, having just the Heuer logo and not disfigured with any TAG references.
A cool watch.

60s Carreras are around on the market.
For example - £1300 for this manual 60s number
or this Volvo special edition for £2500

I bought mine new and back then paid £1,250.
Nowadays they fetch about £1,200-£1,300.
Mind you, I don't advocate buying expensive new watches as an investment. Remember, the value of your investments can go down...

My new watch, bought it on Thursday...its a 1966 Breitling Toptime Chorno, with the Venus 178 movement, now on a brown leather strap that really brings out the slightly aged lumini (sp?)
Im very pleased.
Will take some pics soon on the new strap as it looks a lot nicer imho.
I've thought about buying the '64 re-issue 'tag', but think i want to hold out for an original, lovely watch.
