DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

This is the story behind the car as told by friend Don Lindfors:

Originally built by Porsche as part of a Dutch order of police cars (last in a batch) but intended to come to the United States as a show car.
It was shown at Washington, DC, New York, New Haven, and Chicago auto shows.
Porsche of America also used the Polizei Targa to pace the 1968 U.S. Road Racing Championship at Bridgehampton, NY.
In 1969, this car was purchased from Porsche by Bill Yates of Bill Yates Porsche of San Juan Capistrano, CA.
The vehicle was on display at the dealership and may have been used to pace some races on the West Coast.
Mr. Yates retained ownership of the 911 Polizei after his dealership closed in the 1980s and until his death in 1996.

Cool JW. Looks like you had nicer weather than we did at Castle Combe, which basically had 3 rivers across it….

I fitted up the bumpers on the project car, machine polished them and fitted the number plates….almost ready for the MOT. The paintwork on the bumpers turned out so well I’ve decided I am going to paint the 964 myself. Should stop me being bored in the off season……

A tuned 993 engine supposedly producing 320 BHP at the wheels in a G body back date. The car itself was very nicely finished with comfortable touring in mind: airconditioning, electric windows and lots of soundproofing.

Since you are a pendant, I assume that you are swinging on the end of a chain somewhere?

Grahams pendantic point is that if it’s at the wheels it can’t be bhp, it’s whp - wheel horse power.

But, though the kettle may be black, pot man Graham is too, because strictly speaking bhp isn’t measured at the flywheel. If it were how would anyone know the bhp of cars like the Smart and Rolls Royces?

Seems, I must, when having a casual conversation with the owner of a car:
1. Not listen to any talk about the power of an engine or
2. Establish whether the measurement of power is HP, BHP, PS and qualified by SAE or DIN as appropriate. Or if Kilowatts are involved. Whether a rolling road or Dyno was used to establish power and how the particular machine was calibrated. Was the measurement at the output shaft, flywheel or wheels and if the latter what assumptions were made about mechanical losses.
Think I will opt for number one above to avoid the pendants or the pedants if tempted to post here concerning the nature of an engine's output.
