Very diplomatic Darren.

A driver. "Concours" is just my shorthand for making it as good as I possibly can (quality and factory authenticity of finish).
Before I ruin it with:
- stonechips
- car door bashes (Brittany Ferries)
- my children's muddy feet, discarded banana skins
- various tasteless sports purpose mods. More on that later
- etc

LH Rear Screen Flange and Corner

The other side of the rear screen, similarly pitted.
This side also needed the lower corner replaced.





Barry made up a lovely little repair piece. His comments:
An interesting fabrication, as it isn't a right angle in cross section, and the angle changes all the way round. Also, the base flange is curved in two (varying) directions as well. Actually didn't take very long to make, and quite a nice job in the end.

Parcelshelf

After a bit of discussion we decided to keep most of the parcelshelf, but the LH end was in need of replacement. A Restoration Design panel was used as the basis for the repairs, but needed work.
Best to let Barry do the talking here, I think.

This area is quite the nastiest to work on. It can be seen quite easily, and yet access is a bit of a pain. It's covered by the huge seat-belt mounting, and also has the engine lid hinge mounting (that has to be referenced perfectly), plus the wiring and parcel-shelf tabs / bracket. It also under-laps the rear bulkhead.

Literally two days work here, and as an example, you can see how many spot welds you have to drill out to 'harvest' the hinge mount, seat-belt plate and parcel-shelf bracket.

In the end I made up a section of bulkhead, as I needed to cut it back a bit anyway, but that would have left me letting a small bit in, right next to the welded-speaker hole. It would have meant old and new welds everywhere, so better to make a slightly larger bit, and have it tidier. These early parcel-shelves are the worst to deal with because of those horrible little ribs. They are so hard to fabricate neatly, and in line right across a long repair. The ones on the new parcel-shelf are nothing like the original, so I had to re-work the few that are used here.

Goodbye parcel-shelf area, and frankly good riddance! On other hand, it does make that whole area of the car look so much healthier.









Little list here for the new apprentice. Just follow the instructions. How hard could it be?

Intricate part of the shell, and as always a joy to see done so very carefully.
I haven't seen my parcel shelf since 1989 so dreading the moment when all is revealed..
This is when reading these projects avidly (as so many do) will be particularly educational if I need to do anything.

Richard's looking for the 12-point cap-head hinge screws not the the hinge pins ...

I googled ETKA and its the VAG on line spares catalogue. Even if it that fits on a lathe wont electronic bolts be rubbish?

Or am i misunderstanding.

Richard, if you end up with too many, i will be in the same boat, i had to behead a few of mine to 'blow the bloody doors orf'.......... so happy to buy some from you.

My alternate plan, as i am replacing crap new bolts anyway with correct period bolts, is to ask dismantlers/restorers if they have them. There is someone on ebay.de at the moment selling 80kg of 911/912 bolts but he wants 999 euro for them so that isnt going to happen....its not worth that much as scrap..... I am finding some oddities, e.g. on my front hubs, 9 bolts to the disk rotors are fine, one is a replacement that is too short so i need one of them, 2 of the small bolts that fasten the front anti-roll bar bracket to the inner wing, 2 spring plate bolts (i have 4 but 2 are slightly longer than specified in the manual) and so it goes on.....

If its any use I used to work at a VW dealer a long while ago and I still occasionally call in for a cup of tea. I could call in with one of mine and have a shifty through their bolts bins and eye some up

Possibly, for comic effect!
ETKA is the key to many wonders of modern manufacturing. Including various bolts which may be suitable, apart from being too long (and in the case of the ones I found, 12.9 steel, which is a bit over the top for a door bolt but won't hurt).
Have ordered a few to check them out - it might be that the head diameter or depth is all wrong. Or that I manage to get some originals, which I'd prefer.
