Not sure if its your 'thing' but I have a couple of very cool Brasilia upright - but low profile - fan shrouds. Used one on a past trekker and they look awesome, especially as you're remote cooling. I'll get a pic...

I don't understand why you would need to change the fan and shroud if you have a remote cooler? Surely the temperature will already be quite low?

From my point of view, purely visual. However, many VW-engined strip cars run low profile shrouds with good results.

They have exactly the same design except the type4 is wider, with more cooling channels. The back of the fan housing (toward front of car) needs extending slightly so that it will fit. The dude will know all this but may think the type1 is big enough.

Cubist - plan is to stick to beetle shroud as it looks almost identical to the 912 one, bar being thicker and a small dented-in shape at the top. That said, if it cools better than the stock one, then perhaps worth a thought. Will question The Dude.

Neil - it's not a remote cooler - it remains in the fan shroud, just a few inches towards the front, out of the airflow from the fan to the left-side cylinders. I'm not sure why Porsche put the cooler where it is, but I want my big cylinders to get as much air as they can.

Bruce - thanks for this. After your first comment, I did some searching and noticed build threads where people were using the bigger Type 4 coolers on VW stuff. There's jiggery to be done on the shroud anyway, so perhaps worth extending the dog house to take it. I'll run this past The Dude.

Just in from dudeHQ...

He's looking at fitting a Type 4 oil cooler but it depends on how the fan shroud modifications work out. He says the Type 1 twin port aluminium cooler is an easy, low cost fit and will work fine with this engine spec. The Type 1 cooler is not as efficient as the $500 billet 912 oil cooler but he's confident that it will be better than the original heavy steel 356 / 912 oil cooler, plus we should see improved cylinder cooling from the new fan shroud anyway.

Additional oil cooling will also be easy, low cost, and discreet to do via external filter pipework if ever needed.

The shell has gone to Barry. Photos to follow. In the mean time, here's some more minor drivel...

Then cleaned some things up...

Fitted new retainers to the window lifters. Luckily had perfect-sized 10mm plastic washers on the shelf in my garage.

Went over to Dude HQ to see my engine, which is pretty much together. Looks beautiful. He bead-blasted the tacky aluminium crank pulley to make it match the case, and drilled two holes the face and a small dimple at the TDC timing notch in to make it resemble the original item. Lovely attention to detail, as ever.

New fan is TIG welded and balanced to reduce vibration and the chance of it shaking to pieces at high RPM:

... it is also thicker than the original item, so should move more air...

New fan house with doghouse for oil cooler, with original unit (cooler located inside, blocking flow). Dude is going with a Type 1 oil cooler, which is smaller than a Type 4 unit but fits the dog house without modification. It's bigger than the original unit anyway, and also made of aluminium, which transfers heat more readily (apparently). Should be fine. If it's not, we can add another cooler via the remote oil filter line...

Can tell your 'dude' ( ;) ) does VW engines... all standard hi-po VW mods, tried and tested. Good stuff!

Cheers Mark. That's exactly what we're going for - lots of tiny modifications which don't detract from the original specification, but add up to give something a bit more special.

Keith - am very glad you approve. Tried-and-tested is what I was after with this. Dude has lots of weird and wonderful drag engines in his workshop which I'm sure you'd be familiar with - things with magnetos and all the cooling removed, and one with a big turbo conversion, which looks like an engine wearing a roll-cage. All very cool. Even though we've changed the majority of parts on my engine, it still just looks more or less like it did when it came out of the car, only cleaner, and with no silicone sealant oozing out from the case joints.

The oil cooler still gets air flow as the fan is larger and shifts more air. Also the doghouse (bit stuck on the back) has an open back so the hot air that has passed through the cooler can exit the shroud/airflow rather than staying in the shroud and being pushed back over the engine like the earlier design.

Hope that makes sense.
