Very interesting discussion, I think you should post the same question in the General section, would be interesting to gauge thoughts over here?
I'm about to start the paintwork on another 911 shell (an old promise, not doing any more, honest!) and I've asked the owner to come and look at this Targa in the flesh to take a view on finish - after all, we know this 'factory' type of finish isn't to everyone's taste….
Cheers,

Thought you might enjoy the read - it's a polarising conversation....

BTW, not claiming to be anywhere in this league, but the thinking is interesting.
You will always get lots of differing opinions on originality/patina/restorations and the levels of all of them Rich. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want from your car and what makes you most happy.
Taking your car alone Rich, some would have preferred it to be left as original as possible ('as Porsche built it') some will say it should have been done to make it the best it could be today and as protected as possible using what is available now, some will say it should be done how you have done it, and others will say they don't care less as long as it looks cool, you like it and you use it as much as possible
Lot's of the people buying these now as purely investments and at big money haven't really got a clue what they are looking at anyway!
They are lead by what they are told and $hiny $hit $ells!

Wise words Jason.
I hope this doesn't seem like a defensive post, really not meant to be, I'm happy with the way my build is going because it's exactly what I want.
But I did think it was interesting how this view of preservation / restoration / rebuild in the 'non-rod' space is shaping up over the pond too. I think it's a good sign that we're all so passionate about this.
And as you pointed out, many of these are being snapped up for investment. It is interesting that this conversation about originality feels like it's heating up as the prices rise. I can't believe some of the asking prices that are being touted for non-historically significant but 'nicely done' cars.
All though it does help with the man maths. I dropped a b*****k yesterday when I was whinging to my wife about the VAT I was forced to pay on the imported wheels - and then stupidly said "imagine if it had the correct value of them on the bill at £xxxx.....s**t"...." "How much? Right, you can pay for the painting of the outside of the house this year....." Doh....

The House!!!...doesn't she understand that flaking window paint and patina is a
good thing!

I think your Targa is just fantastic and would be over the moon with it.I'm delighted with my shabby RHD 2.4T Targa bought on this forum from Squiredan earlier this year, just done some local repairs and got her MOT'd and running and it's just brilliant to be rolling around in an early 911 again , whatever the condition. My initial impulse was to go and do a full resto , but certain companies persuaded me to just roll her as she is and to enjoy, so thats what i'm doing , for now.....

Yep. That's what I did for about 10 years. Fixed up bits, hoovered the carpet and drove it. Not that all of it was stress-free. But there were some fantastic drives in it.
I still plan to drive this a lot afterwards...

OK - so two very exciting parcels turned up last week; one from Harvey Weidman's place in California, the other from Alan in Bournemouth.
It's been too cold and rubbish to get some photos....but tonight as the sun was setting, I thought it might work well to give them their debut....
A set of Sept / Oct / Nov & Dec 1970 Deep sixes without hearts, fully refirbished....
It's only taken about 12 months to get them here

And I'm still waiting for the centre caps....
I've got a deep 6 with a heart for the spare, that needs refirbishing at Alan's....but if it comes out as well as the front calipers, I'll be well chuffed....
Check out these, I got these back from Alan a week or two ago - they've been given a clean and a polish and a full re-build, inc new pistons etc....but I think look fantastic.
What I like about them is they still have some imperfections on them, although for me, just the perfect amount. and of course they'll be in perfect working order, so all good

Very cool stuff

; Canford Classics also rebuilt my ali front callipers and I couldn't believe how good they turned out.
Those wheels do look extra special, would love to see a photo of how Harvey finishes the inside if you get a chance.
Cheers,

Homecoming.....
So a couple of weeks ago, I went to Darren's and picked up the shell. It hasn't got any less beautiful since I last saw it
We agonised for ages about what to cover it with for the journey. The solution....? Bed sheets, brown paper, clingfilm, a cheapie halfrauds cover and some packing tape. Even Rich the painter thoght Darren & I were going a bit over the top. But frankly I was very pleased with it.
Fully and massively strapped onto the trailer tying the dolly on, not touching the car. It turned out to be the most secure it's ever felt on the back and I was very grateful for that....and frankly this was my least fave bit of the process. It's really not fun taking the shell on the road like this...but the weather was kind, not a drop of rain....
Guard of honour on the way out....
Back home a few hours later....
And, there was a surprise in the garage.....Wife & kids had organised a welcome home banner. Very sweet. And now you all know that my car has a name....that the family gave it, nothing to do with me, honest....
And then unwrapping with some very excited help
And finally all sorted.....
Where it's sitting now, waiting for me to pluck up the courage to go anywhere near it with a spanner and other metal parts....

Lovely mate, don't stare at it for too long...better get cracking putting it back together.
but
tut tut , everyone knows that you should reverse a 911 onto a trailer, the engine ( and weight ) is at the back

Rich - as I said to you at Mike's RSR 'unveiling' - just pick up a handful of gravel & throw it at the front of the car ... then you won't have to worry about putting the first scratch on it !!
This is the best part of a restoration - putting all the clean/refurbished parts back on.

Car looks great in the garage; a nice work space you have there.
Tempting as it may be remember not to use a car cover; fresh paint needs to breathe and covering it too soon can cause really major issues!
Looking forward to seeing it come back together.
Good luck,

Car is under bedsheets and a huge, new painter's sheet, 4m x 4m.....I think it's breathing ok. Garage got a bit damp in last bit of weather, but is bone dry now.....

Make sure they're
very light and breathable, personally I'd leave it uncovered. Some light dust and a bit of damp won't do it any harm whereas we've seen some real horror stories where people have covered and 'protected' their new paintwork!
