So the bad running was persisting, annoyingly.
Its not what you want when you've spent considerable time rebuilding it.
Working through things to narrow it down, I had checked the fuel as I had suspected the garage I bought the last tank full from.  But after checking to see if it had water in it proved that wasn't the problem.
I read up on similar problems on the 356 registry and deduced it was either my adjustment of the valves,  although I am always very careful with that,  or a blocked Idle jet, which it might be considering the rusty spots that appeared on the engine over the winter.
As it was fathers day, I tidied up the garage and tossed a coined, what to check first,  the valves or the carbs.
Carbs won, and when I took the first carb off and then the first Idle jet out, this is what I found.....

Removed it, checked all the others, just to be sure, and put it back together. 
After a test run,  I can confirm, a slither of metal in an Idle jet will cause constant popping back up through the carbs.
Where it came from is a mystery, and I'm glad it didn't make it into a cylinder.

Just glad I can think about using it again now.

well found . yes deffo not what you want to see in the carb . So running well now ?

If it is metal looks like a piece of thread from a nut/bolt that was cross threaded and came apart?

I agree Robert, definitely looked like a bit of stripped thread and I can only think it came from the air filter bolt hole Neil. Its strange because I haven't stripped any threads to my knowledge.
Just very glad its back back to running smoothly again James.
Its funny because before I resolved the issue, while I was messing with the idle screws and stops, with the idle stops not touching the lever arms at all, the revs wouldn't drop below 900rpm.
But now its fixed, when I unwind the stops it will stumble and stall, so I can set the idle to where ever I want. Yeh.
What I'm trying to say is , I would have thought having a blocked jet would have made the idle lower not speed it up. But what do I know......a little bit more now!

I have to agree. My experience of a blocked jet is idle dropping and sometimes stalling.

I sorted out the carb issue , set the Idle and thought all was good to go to classics at the clubhouse.
Except on my way down there, the revs wouldn't drop when changing gear. Made it down and back ok, and it travels well on the motorway. The day after I thought I would look at the problem.... having discussed it with friends at the meeting, it could have been a few things. Air leak, at carb or manifolds, air mixture settings, or even warped carb bottoms. Knelt down behind the car, thought what do I look at first, and reasoned it best to check the Idle stops. I put a screw driver to one and unscrewed...... it undid more than I thought it would, and then the other also. It can't be that easy I thought. So took it for a test drive, and hey presto, Result! When I had set them before, I thought the engine had warmed up sufficiently, but clearly not.
So I'm a happy camper again.

Its been a while since my last confession, because I have been using the car, not just working on it. But that doesn't mean I haven't worked on it. I wanted to re-fit my harnesses, so I had to make holes in my floorpan, for the lap part of the belts. I bought some FIA square belt washers and bent them to suit the rear corner of the pan. Just need to cut the bolts down a bit.











Now that the kids don't need or fit in the back of the car, I utilised the bar I put in there for their belts.

As you can see I have been slowly cleaning the metal in the rear interior, so as to paint it and install some much needed sound proofing.

I drove down to Goodwood to meet Stretch and collect the tools I bought from him, I wore some decent moldable ear plugs, not the cheap ones, and by the time I got home, travelling at 4000+rpm for a total of 4 hours has given me tinnitus. So, sound deadening is a must plus a silencer in the end of the pipe, soon. Loud pipes may save lives, but don't let them kill your ears.

Thank you for the update. I'm been thinking about 3 point belts in our 356 given the distances we do. I thought people often put them into the side walls
