Are there downsides to using them though (apart from the price) - aren't they weaker and prone to corrosion/deterioration?

Yes to both, hence the value of a good set that have been checked for alignment! They are a requirement for some race/rally classes.aren't they weaker and prone to corrosion/deterioration?
