Are there downsides to using them though (apart from the price) - aren't they weaker and prone to corrosion/deterioration?

Yes to both, hence the value of a good set that have been checked for alignment! They are a requirement for some race/rally classes.

That is a transmission jack, used on 964s onwards to remove the gearbox with the engine in situ.

The car has also been treated to a genuine Porsche brand new oil tank (this being a '72 model).
