Feel the frustration. When I changed my rear bars to 3L turbo Bob told me to clean the centre spline hub right through or suspension set-up would be difficult, and at the same time told me to change to 2 piece spring plates to make it all easier for him later on.
Not easy to 'wash' the spline section out but used a length of rope with a towel tried mid length and pulled it back and forth through those splines with lots of WD 40. As you say and know, crud galore.
Bars slipped in after with globs of coppa-slip grease.
I used Automotion (USA) 1/2 hard bushes which are still in there from 1994 ish.

The wheel came out FAR better than I expected, real good job done.
You will look at that and remember for years to come!

In the end I removed all rubber from my (hillclilmb) suspension but in later years put a lot of rubber jointing back in.

So, what separates the two inner ends of the torsion bars? Is there a lip, a baffle in the centre? Or, do the female splines in the torsion tube simply run from left side to right side uninterrupted?

I think they are uninterrupted so that the two bars are almost touching once installed, I probably had a load of crud pushed through from one side when installing the first bar, then a load of crud pushed through from the other side when installing the second. So the best advice in hindsight is definitely to clean this out thoroughly when you have both the bars removed with some kind of long wire loo brush!

The spines need to be broached as a separate boss, about 100mm long and iirc mine was straight through, difficult to broach to a step or blind hole.
The boss is then placed down the tube and swaged to the cut-outs on the boss hence the big dimples you can see, and, again, iirc there are a few large plug welds to secure both together and prevent movement. Drain holes are drilled in the tube and I think this is where internal corrosion and cracking can occur.

Been a long time since I looked hard at my 73T, other years construction could be different of course as the car developed.

See the current Zurich car on Barry's cellette where a tube is being replaced at the moment.

With the rear arms in I have moved on to the fronts. Once again I have spent my money in areas i dont want to have to be revisiting. Fortunately The ER front kit was much more kind to me than the rear, no bolts to align this time really. On a side note, I emailed ER about my earlier issues with the rear kit, asking how im supposed to align the bolts now my two bushes are glued into place and they dont line up... deathly silence for a week so far, I guess that sums up their customer service for you, there isnt an answer they can give me which isnt the fault of their instructions.

Cleaned up and greased all the adjusters etc, I'd love to someone to explain why Porsche made the front suspension so easily height adjustable but decided not to do the same thing on the rear, surely it must have been very simple


With the A arms installed I fitted the struts



Moved onto the steering rack, the tie rod ends ball joints are knackered, as are the inboard bushes So the tie rods are getting binned for turbo tierods. Once again, dont want to be taking this all apart again so spending some money here





Now if only my Design 911 order would arrive, its only 3 weeks old after all. (Rant ahead warning....)Does anyone else find there speed of service abysmal? Place any order, I can guarentee 50% of parts will be "on order" and you will be waiting a minimum of 2 weeks but more than likely longer for your order to be dispatched. Maybe its just me and my prior BMW experience but when I put stuff in my online "basket" and pay for it I expect it to be in stock. Not to get an email a day later saying, "most of the stuff you ordered we dont actually have, youll have to wait for us to bother to order it ourselves, then get it delivered etc, probably 2 months if your lucky" I could understand it if it was weird oddball stuff I was ordering but it never is, stuff like the Lemforder Turbo Tierod kit, the stock Mann air filter, the std 15mm roll bar bushes, I could go on and on, its pretty shameful really for a Porsche 911 specialist supplier. I think Ill use Rose Passion in future, at least they stock the parts their website says they have and their shipping is still pretty reasonable.

Cars not far away from driving now. Just need an engine that runs, some wheels and tyres that go round in circles, and some brakes that stop things... sounds so simple!

I tend to use type911 in general, but the times I've used design911 delivery has been 3 working days, but all service parts.
The des911 discount to PCGB members helps kill the postage mind.
I've had poor service on my Honda motorcycle parts specialists, parts on their site are sometimes in the USA but you have no way of seeing that until your order is placed....

They don't tell you, I've complained and get a simple 'sorry'.

Yep, I have learned my lesson and avoid D911 as far as humanly possible, but there is not much choice out there for non-OEM stuff. Customer service is embarrassingly bad in my most experiences and no point of asking for any technical help nowadays. My experience anyway.

Use their Parts Finder a lot though to see if OEM parts are available and to see how much the OPC is going to take me for

Their parts finder is good but the prices are not OPC prices. Check a few with your OPC and you may be pleasantly surprised.

I think just about all non service parts come via he OPC route and you pay the mark-up.

I bought OPC coolant parts for my Boxster at less than D911 and Type911 and got my pcgb discount off.

I always purchase from OPC nowadays and was getting an owners club discount of 10% - now 15% with the Porsche Classic Register membership (still no number plates though!).

I find that D911 Parts Finder also gives a good indication on full net price and availability (i.e. NLA).

That 10% off certainly made a big difference on two front wings Delivered by the Solihull OPC van straight to my garage

Had a big win today. Ive been trying to sort a swap deal for a while for my throttle bodies and stacks which as I established earlier are incorrect 70/71 2.2 units. All the other parts of my engine are correct 69S as far as I can tell, so I really wanted to sort this so I dont have a frankenstein engine. I didnt really hold out much hope of finding someone in the opposite position as me especially as the parts are one year only parts, but find someone I did. After a lot of emailing and negotiations I finally got hold of my correct 1969S parts for the price of a parcel delivery to the USA. Im really happy with getting these, as its one of the last things I need to get my car to 69S spec. All I really need now are wheels and oil cooler.
