Wow i have just read this whole thread and has now got me on ebay looking for another classic porker to play around with

First free Sunday in Months, amazing how much you can get done


I have had these templates (thanks to Mike Bainbridge) for the rear ARB mounts for some time now. I should have taken more photos of the process but just wanted to crack on....



The initial hole drilling was abit a leap of faith, but the measurements given in the template paperwork is a great help







ARB bar and gearbox mount fitted, and then used to help locate the plate brackets...afew zip ties and spirit levels later I was ready to weld in place...



I admit this isn't the prettiest of welds, due to the tightness of the location, but its solid...



...and now covered with seam sealer waiting to dry and be painted in the next few days.

Whilst I had the welder out, it was also about time I finished the petrol tank.

First alignment...



...and time for those important first tack welds



The tank was in and out about 10 times in total, abit of welding, check alignment, abit of welding etc etc etc

Completed the welding...



...and time for the final alignment check. All that heat and movement and it remained blob-on.





Measurements say that the cap will sit flush once the foam tank seal is applied, I hope


I trial fitted the 'Dog Bowl', fits ok. Other than welding in place, any ideas how to secure it?

That's a lovely bit of welding. Hats off. My skills are limited to wielding a grinder with a wire brush on it at the moment...that's some precision work of yours.

Good work (and welds) Chris - do you do a pulse-style weld when running a seam - i.e. constantly switching on and off?

Hi Mark,

Yes when running a seam, especially on thinner pieces of metal I do it in stages, Pulse style. Welding about 3cm to 4cm at a time. For a circle, or ring as on the tank, think of it as a clock face.

Weld at:

and then after afew minutes:

For a straight weld, do the same 3cm to 4cm welds but spread the welds out along the length of metal as you go to help spread out the heat.

I must say it feels so good welding on fresh metal, very gratifying feeling!
