Just a quick update, but we’re moving on at a pace now

Been busy since last Wednesday, but following a rush of blood to the head, I swept the garage this morning, blew out the dust and masked off the car. I then joined my big compressor (well the tank anyway, as I haven’t had time to replace the RCCB in the house that I think is too sensitive and keeps blowing a couple of seconds after I turn the big compressor on every time), to the main compressor and my little compressor. My logic was plenty of air reservoir, and the 2 compressors hopefully keeping up with my air fed mask and the spray gun. It took a while to play with various fittings to get them all joined up (PCL is my connector of choice, but the little compressor and the air fed hose, etc are all euro connectors), but I did it.

Time for lunch to let any dust in the air settle, then mix up the first batch of 2K and panel wipe the car. I ran the pipe from a blowing fan into the garage and turned on the (explosion proof) extractor.


So just after lunch we had this

What seemed like ages, but was probably only 4 hours (!) and we had this (just look at the state of the extraction filter top right – seems to have done its job though)






I took the time to properly clean my spray guns (plural, as I started off using the 1.8mm primer gun by mistake, but noticed while on the first panel – the FNS inner wing), but didn’t have time to remove the masking or tidy the garage, so I’ve got this facing me first thing in the morning



But it really looks like progress now,

Do you have a water trap in thefeedto the gun?

I have drains on the tanks, 2 drain drop legs, a water trap in the main filter set and a water trap in the gun. Is that paranoid?

Maybe, but in my limited experience, the air can't be dry enough!

Way to go mate. Can you stick a carnation and a rolled up Telegraph on it for when I come down on the 19th. Just want to make sure I still recognise it as it has changed so much

Car seems to have stalled, but actually lots of necessary prep work has been going on.

I’m slowly working my way through blasting the suspension prior to rebuilding and reassembly. It’s a bit of a slog, but the pile of corroded bits is slowly turning into a pile of more usable parts. I plan on buying some Aluminium coloured epoxy mastic (thanks for the suggestion Sean) at the Resto Show in a couple of weeks for the rear swing arms and front cross member. The rest of the big parts will be epoxied black.

Had a few delays getting repeat access to the big blasting cabinet, but it is sooooo much better than the bench top version I’ve borrowed. Back at it tomorrow morning hopefully after an aborted plan for today.

Emptied the parrafin from my parts washer after I realised there was about 20mm of sludge in the bottom - shows it’s been used though. Waiting for some sweet smelling Gunk to arrive (due by yesterday)


Out of 4 CV joints, 2 had races that were badly dented/ marked, 1 was just polished (so OK) and the other somewhere in between. So 4 shiny new GKN ones now waiting for the drive shafts to be ready. The gaiters look cheap, so the originals will be going back on, especially given the bad press newer rubber is getting.

Today I made a start of cleaning up the loom ready to fit when Akexcxcxcx (Garage Bitch) visits. Slowly working my way through disconnecting (& labelling) all the wires from the fuse panel so that 1) I can paint the metal work, 2) it will make reinstalling easier & of course 3) I can fit one of Jonny’s great fuse panels. Goodness gracious my knees are stiff now! Just having a tea break before completing the job.

Had a great visit to the SwapMeet at Greatworth. Met up (finally) with Lewis (Northy) to pick up his spare front wing that I will repair. Somehow in a distracted moment I also managed to buy a pair of wings and a set of complete front & rear bumpers that were all in better condition than mine. Spent a while chatting to the seller but never asked his name - but thank you. My wings and bumpers are striped, repaired and expoxied. So I now need to strip and tidy the new ones and repair Lewis’ wing but looks like I’ll have some stuff to release once I’m done. As Lewis’ wing was for just a donation to charity (what a fine chap), providing it doesn’t take too much time to titilate, that can move on on the same terms.

It was great chatting to friends both old & new, but there were a number of folks that have subsequently commented about being there that I would like to have met in the real world. Maybe I’ll be better organised next time.

In the near term I’ll be firing up Jonny’s plating kit and trying to make some parts go yellow - watch this space.

Wow, should have used the Macbook. This was only supposed to be a couple of lines, and my typing on the iPhone is not good !

Oh, and I got my ar$e into gear after and ordered some sound damping mat. That will also have to go in soon.

Northy's wing is a near (left) side wing. It is in remarkably good condition for a free wing.

As we all like pictures, here's a photo of the pile of bits, post degreasing but prior to blasting.


Looking at this pile it reminds me that my pedal box was completely missing some of the bushes and generally in a pretty poor state of repair. A complete bushing kit has arrived, so something else on ToDo my list.

So, another quick update. What have I been doing lately …..

Stripped the various fittings, lights, rubbers, etc from my new bumpers.

Cleaned the old wiring and removed the old fuse panel, ready for re-installing the former and replacing the latter with one of Classic Retrofit’s units.


I removed two quick connector blocks used to wire some aftermarket rubbish – good job too, as both cables showed significant corrosion at that point. On one cable I just cut the last 25mm off and added a new spade terminal. The other will get a solder type of butt splice (when they arrive). One other wire had a nick, but the core looked fine, so I slid some shrink wrap down the wire, and all is now good to go.

The heater control panel was cleaned up and the blower switch checked. There was no connectivity at all across any of the switch positions. A bit of cleany, cleany, followed by some bendy, bendy and all is now well again.



Blasted about 60% of my pile of crustiness - I spent about 9 hours last Wednesday to break the back of the job. After that time the blast media was so soft, it was tickling paint away but the rust was laughing at it. Hopefully back again on Monday, and first job will be to replace the media for some fresh stuff.



Needed to fit the new door hinge bushes before the Garage Bitch arrives this week. The originals were a bit crusty after paint stripping – we did try cleaning them out, but finally had to settle for using an 8mm polishing stone. Not too happy that the bushes were good, and as they are only £3 or so (each) from Porsche, replacement seemed a good idea.

Ha ha !

What a b@lls ache the job was. - I’m sure there is a simple way, but I found all of the difficult ways to do it. Tried lots of things, but what worked in the end was to drill the bushes out to 8.5mm & use a 3/8 tap to cut a thread


Screw in a 3/8 bolt


And hit the bujesus out of it with the air chisel (the BFH was no use at all). I have no pictures of that, as holding the air chisel on the head of the bolt was hard enough. Did manage to do myself some mischief in the process. None the less, happiness followed


Fitting was not a simple case of the reverse to quote a well-known publisher, but a more gentle wind the new bushes in with a nut, bolt and a pair of washers.


Even though I reamed the new ones out before fitting, I still needed to take a smidge more out once installed.



More happiness, but 3 more pairs to do.



The last thing that had to be done before the Garage Bitch arrives was to make some of the inside shell go black and prime the hinges.

And various parts of the inside of the shell satin blacked


So, next week, the Garage Bitch arrives for the day and the wiring will be fed up the tunnel, and doors and lids will be hung (probably / hopefully).
