Agree, the 4 is just that bit more classic than the 5, headlamps of course make the difference.

As this is on a new page I couldn't know what you were talking about and assumed you meant Renault 4 and 5. It didn't make sense - the headlamps were nowhere in it.

I think you have to be a certain age to like the DB4.

To me the glasshouse is too small compared to the body, the front too long and the position of the strakes on the front wing emphasise the weight of the slab side.

I know it’s a GT not a sports car but it looks so heavy and slow.

If it wasn’t for all that I could probably live with the peculiar shape of the front wheel arch and the unnecessary clutter of front side lights beside the indicator.

If you couldn't bring yourself to tolerate it, even a db4 can be restomodded - a quick ducktail, wide arches and bucket seats and bob's your uncle.

Personally I don't think that colour suits the car.

There were also 5 different Series of DB4 & I think the later Series IV & V cars look better - especially the lower profile bonnet air intake, less 'fussy' grille style & the oil cooler 'scoop' underneath.

Here's a Series IV car in a better colour:

In 1959 a DB4 did 0-100 and stopped in 21.5 secs and the GT version exceeded 170. It was the fasted car you could buy. A friend had a primrose yellow one that did about sixty in first.

A little later I had a DB5 which was as fast as an E Type in 4th. In 5th it was more than 15mph faster. The E Type you bought was not the same as the one the magazines reviewed. My early 4.2 did 5000rpm in top or 125mph.

DBs we’re quiet, rode well and handled well for the time. They were a luxury GT car for driving across Europe and were comfortable cruising at 120.

I agree it’s an age thing and I well remember how much more quickly a friend’s 1974 2.4T cornered though it was very noisy and not as fast. Later models were though.

The DB4,5,6 & S six cylinder engine was a beautiful alloy, short stroke, six that revved to 6000 and sounded magnificent. I loved mine and was sorry to see it go, but traffic was increasing and so slow moving, it became impractical and I started to use a 1954 Silver Dawn instead. Neither its nor the E type’s engines were as smooth.

I still have a beautiful Healey 3000, which is quite fast for an oldie, but a truck compared to my 356c.

Definitely looks better in the sagey green and with the bits you mention, but from that angle I’ll add the difference in thickness of window surrounds from door to rear pop-out as another weak bit of detailing. And is that mirror factory? :0

I struggle with most, maybe even all, of Carrozzeria’s cars compared to the other great Italian design houses. I’d sooner have anything from Pininfarina. In fact, if you can get past the brand values of the manufacturers, I’d say the MGB GT is a sweeter piece of design than that Aston.

Yes, I'll concede to both of those points - that mirror's dreadful.

Regardless of individual opinion on looks a good DB4 will probably cost in excess of half a million, a DB5 more and a 6 less. They’re rare and much sought after, but then MGBs sell well too and are amongst the best lookers too.

Another very beautiful Aston that I photographed about fifty years ago
