Guess that was the year of import then, which after posting above I've googled a bit and it would look to be at latest a '63 from the engine lid.

All that aside, what an adventure.
My father-in-law bought an MoT failure VW camper in the late 60s, riveted biscuit tin over the rust and drove it to Iran and back.
I wonder how successful such trips would be today.
