Found the story. Has caused much embarrassment as the spoof ad was sent in by persons unknown to Dennis Publishing. The person in the copy department responsible for accepting the ad artwork didn't bother to check it and went ahead to print...
That is going to be an interesting one for the publisher and the advertiser to sort out between them.

The 1500S was quite a car in its day. Harry Kallstrom came 2nd overall in the 1963 RAC Rally, beating a lot of famous and talented driver/car combinations, with two others in the top 20 finishers.

When the 1500 Beetle came out first in 1967, one or two of the dealer's demo cars were mysteriously quicker than the customer ones - 1500S carbs and internals..........
A friend's 1500S was the first car I was a passenger in at over 100mph

PS - the full results list makes fascinating reading for Rally enthusiasts of a certain age -

Cool, my Dad's first car was a 1500 Beetle in chinchilla grey. My parents drove to Switzerland in it, my Dad driving long enough wondering what was going on with the handling 'til he realised he had a puncture & had wrecked the wheel...
I see B41299 in 13th. Paddy Hopkirk in the Cooper behind

So elegant.
With a different badge and a different design house it would be lauded and in museums.
As well as badge- and continent-snobbery it also shows how good design alone isn’t enough, it also needs to be a good car and not have the mechanics of a shite box.

Never come across one before. It’s a lovely looking thing. Bit 911 rear quarter lights, bit Toyota 2000gt, front end reminds me of a scimitar gte. A bit of a mongrel that works

My wife relates to that..
Tea, Coffee, bacon buttie, millionaire's shortbread, chips, Chief Runner back to the tow car, trailer hitch guide, Got all the Documents, wheel choc assistant, Sympathy, elation, clapping at the Awards, polishing the silver and glass. Head of Finance and Catering, overalls washer, being quiet when needed...
For 31 years.
A marvel,
Chocolates on Valentine Day.
