Wot, not another '79 Targa resto thread

Very brief update. Topsides now also epoxy primed (Rust Buster’s 421) . I really had to drag the 121 epoxy out of the spray gun – it really didn’t want to spray, probably as it was soooooo cold. The 421 seems less viscous to start with, but I left it in the house overnight to warm up, then mixed 15% thinners and it came out of the spray gun fine.



Still more work to do on the rear wing, but significantly better than when I started, and now it's protected from rusting.

After Mark's warning , before painting, I went around the leaded areas and gave them another thorough clean, so let's hope I don't see any issues along the way.

I’ll let it sit for a few days (chores to do !), then seam seal, underseal and top coat the inside and underneath if I’m brave. I need to spray the loose panels, so not decided whether they come before or after underseal, etc. Time will tell, but I fancy finishing the shell, covering in polythene and moving it right to the edge of the garage to create more space for the panels.

One colour. A major milestone!

Still two colours actually - the inside and undersides are covered in 121 which is a beigey colour. The top sides are 421 and grey, although some of the beigey colour bits were topped up with grey, like the top half of the froot.

As you say, a major milestone - well chuffed.

Big lift for you when it is in one (or 2) even colours. Suddenly it becomes a car in the making rather than perpetual repair.

Well done, the temperature is very low and the humidity is high.
You need good garage space when all the panels are in there.

Regular readers of Peter's blog may have noticed me getting a mention in despatches as his 'Garage Bitch'. I have the pleasure of swinging by PK Towers regularly to be a spare pair of hands on his car and bike projects and generally enjoy the craic. Thought it was time I introduced myself rather than just be a long-term lurker. Howdy doody

Well life carries on and more of the same has followed. I’ve now primered the panels – doors, front wings, engine lid and froot lid, plus the front valance.



Today, The Garage Bitch (recently of this parish) came to play.
The day commenced with coffee and a chat, as usual, then we ventured out into the cold (I lie – it was a nice day, especially for February and now that the 4” snow has gone away). Alexcxcxc (long story) used his beady eyes to look for nooks and crannies where the epoxy paint appeared light, and I used an aerosol to make them better.
Then to ensure a good paint coating along the seams of the doors, we mixed up some epoxy and poured it into the door edges (my bit) & rotated the doors in the air (his bit), so that the paint hopefully got into the seams that I could not get properly into while spraying.

Then we sloped off to the local café for bacon butties

Freshly victualed, we then got all of the panels ready to fit, so that I could start panel alignment. However, my engine & froot lid hinges were still painted & greasy, and I was reluctant to make a mess of the new paintwork. The door hinges were bare, and if we fitted those now, all alignment would go when I removed the hinges to paint. So we moved to plan B, and put the panels away again.

Plan B evolved to include attacking the bumpers, engine support bar and parts various, removing everything so that they are now also ready for stripping and remedial attention.

Then we had more tea and biscuits Thanks for your help mate

Too many chores around the house !.

Snuck out into the garage again a few times over the past few days, grabbing a moment here and a moment there.
Scuffed up the primer, seam sealed and put a coat of Gravitex underseal under the floor pan and rear floor. Ran out, more ordered, but a little pause while I wait for the new supplies to arrive.
Here’s some piccies in the meantime, and as I haven’t published any new-fangled moving pictures with sound yet, you’ll have to hum to yourselves. Sorry about that.

I also went back and did the Targa bar, etc. I worked on the principle that if water could reach it, then the seams got sealed.

This is where I ran out - thought that I had more, but clearly I didn’t, so just hang on for a short while ……..



Soon be time to break out the air fed mask and give the Grand Prix White a try

I know you were all worried for me about running out of underseal, but fear not, the extra product arrived today. Having done some more interior decorating (I so hate sanding and glossing – well all interior decorating really) I snuck back into the external man cave. Not much to say, but have some pictures.

Yesterday, while waiting for more Gravitex, I masked the car up, ready to do the inner wings and sills (lower half)






So onto today, more Gravitex in the gun and sprayey, sprayey time once more


Engine bay – lower half coated. Bit of over spray coming up behind the torsion tube, but the sound deadening will hide this.

Time for a moan – if a company asks you to specify colours & you take the time to specify colours on your order, then it would be nice if they then took the time to send you what you’d asked for !. It was increasingly difficult to see where I had sprayed when I had to use grey underseal on grey primer – made worse by the amount that was building up on my safety specs. Hey, but not all bad news – a little sarcy moan at the company and they’re sending me 2 free black bottles of Gravitex (shame it’s too late for this part of the job, but they’ll be used on the inside of the front winds and valances, etc later.

Anyway, rear inner wing looking forward (the patch by the torsion bar mounting is not missed, it’s just grey overspray from doing the sill.
