However I did manage to pick up a smashed windscreen on the way...
So that little rust bubble next to the wipers needs doing at some point...
I really just want to use it, but the screen is toast.

Oh dear - autoglass/autowhoever repair job?
There's always something else to do (my car currently looks like a bubbly seive but is driving great at the moment) - think of the jobs as just more fun that you're building up for the future!

I popped the screen out yesterday and have managed to control the urges to rip into 'proper' paint rectification as I don't have the time or inclination for more metal surgery!
So a quick clean up of a flaky bit and on with the rust treatment and primer.
A splash of silver and lacquer today and the screen can go back in tomorrow
Only the bit around the wiper spindle will be visible, and I'm just going to have to ignore that
Off to Porsche in Wilmslow after breakfast to grab a new seal and chrome trims.

I put the new screen in last night with the wife on the cord inside. In first go in less than 5 minutes! Result
I had to double up all the wiring for the heated screen as the new versions have two elements.
Hopefully the cosmetically bad paint rectification will last a decent length of time if not look good

After running the car for a while (all good!) I'm now tackling the last two major jobs. Fuel tank replacement and oil tank repair/replacement.
I sourced a good used later 80 litre tank from Dougie (I still owe you!)
I cleaned all the original rubber sealant off and treated some minor surface rust here and there.
Good intentions to use the OEM surface finish were blown out by ease and availability (and cost...) of modern equivalents so it was painted by my local Audi garage in an underbody stone chip material for a bargain price
A minor repair was needed to the top of the tank support but nothing too bad and under the fresh underseal was plenty of original green paint.
It's now in the hole and I'll plumb it up tomorrow. It is a little different to my original, but the basics of a feed and return are the same so it should all work!

Now fitted and plumbed in.
One thing I have noticed is that the gauge only reads down to the 1/4 mark then stops, pretty much at the point the light comes on. However having plugged back in my original sender it is exactly the same...
I guess I've just never run it this low before being mindfull of the rust no doubt lurking at the bottom of the old tank!
I've just bought a good used oil tank from the US so I can finally run the oil at the correct capacity and stop covering the floor ever time I stop...

Not sure if this is relevant to your issue but I replaced my sender unit ages ago. I purchased a sender unit from Roger Bray and fitted it. The unit would not read a correct level, on further inspection I found that the sender unit was touching the bottom of the tank, it only just touched the bottom, so it looked ok but when you nipped the nuts down the unit was forced onto the bottom of the tank and this put a slight flex in the sender unit, enough to stop the unit working. Might be worth checking.

25 mile test drive without asking me
It was the first time I used this local garage and I won't be going back there again!
I rang them when I noticed the mileage on the way home and they said
'we test drive every car that comes in for an MOT'
'What? For 25 miles? Without asking the owner?'
'Er...'
No real excuse.
If they wanted to go out in the car they should ask!
There is a reason I normally stay with the car, I couldn't today as I needed to pick the kids up from school so cycled back home.
Anyway no obvious harm done, so I can get back to enjoying the car this summer
