The hillclimber to beat in 1926. Basil Davenport in his GN Spider special, beat Caracciola's SSK up Shelsey by almost 2 seconds in 1930, ex-works AFN engine:
"This 1500cc powerhouse boasted four-valve cylinder heads and twin-spark ignition, and throughout 1925 brought Davenport a mixture of impressive results and engine seizures."

And still going very strong.
I think it is currently having an oily rag rebuild, what a machine, in fact, all those Shelsley Specials are magic.

Apparently Caracciola had Neubauer in the passenger seat of the Mercedes, so he wasn't without ballast
