And then protect everything with epoxy mastic

Then I look at at the engine lid pull. Now some of you may remember that I went to leather straps at the rear for the cool ‘hotrod’ look.

Well that was part of the reason - the other part was that the tube holding the cable pull had rotted away completed. Now I was able to get at the whole system easily I thought it would be a good opportunity to replace it properly.

I’d looked online and couldn’t find replacement tubes (to be honest I didn’t look too hard) so I though this would be a perfect replacement:-

It’s 10mm copper central heating pipe

I needed to make something to hold the handle in place that would grip the bodywork, grip the pipe, and let the cable run down the middle.

After a bit of head scratching (and lathe work) I came up with this

Image

It’s a 10mm brass bolt - I drilled a 5.5mm hole down the middle and turned down the hex head to a flange

I ten bought a standard compression joint, and tapped a 10mm thread down the middle of it

I screwed in the 10mm bolt, and put 2 small holes in so I could tighten it later

This is the finished setup

From the left side, the first nut clamps the brass bolt onto the bodywork. The next nuts use a compression joint to grab onto the pipe

Then it was a matter of sorting out the rest of the pipe and fixing it to the inner wing. I opted to use rivnuts and home made P Clips (with rubber preventing contact between ally P clips and copper pipe.

I opted to put another compression joint into he pipe run so I could dismantle it all if I needed to in the future

I bought a new latch mechanism as well and fitted all that back together - nice to have it all working as it should do once again

Most recently, yesterday was my birthday so I got to spend a decent amount of time in the shed.

I finally got onto the panel that I cut off a couple of months ago. Initially I was just stripping paint off to see what needed to be replaced.

I decided to start with this bit

Image

It didn’t look too clever and underneath there was a rusty hole that couldn’t be patched neatly

So......

I started by trying to drill out spot welds but ended up cutting the whole bit out and finishing the separation on the workbench

The I set about recreating the two pieces I’d cut out - this is actually version 1 as I hadn’t made it long enough so I scrapped it and started again

Prior to welding them together
