OK need a bit of help now.

How is the wing joined on to the engine lid shut - is it a series of spot welds?

Image

Towards the top of the engine opening is a join - I was thinking of cutting the wing from that point at 90 degrees to the opening all the way down to the bottom of the wing

He doesn't have much luck on the euro runs... :(
I wouldn’t say that - as it’s not his fault it’s covered his restoration work for the last few years

I thought the red dashed line are new race inspired graphics.

It’s a series of spotwelds down that flange. Power wire brush on the grinder will find them.

The join is three layers, screen flange on top, quarter then inner wing underneath.

It’s spotwelded through all three then (originally anyway on an early car) leaded over the top.

The wing is the top layer at the bottom, then inner wing, then rear xmbr underneath. Again with some lead blending it in.

It might look something like this. Although I made this flange and screen section so maybe not so much...

I bought snazzy makita thin belt sander. Which is great. But it worked so well when taking off the paint to show the spot welds - that it took off the metal a bit and hid the welds.

I found the easiest thing was to start at one end and work along gradually with a chisel - as the panel moved the hidden welds started to appear

Bit of work with the twisted wire wheels and it cleaned up quite a bit

Apart from the obvious hole towards the rear the metal on the top side didn’t look wonderful - most of it is very solid though so I’ll work with it. However there are a few bits of more severe pitting so I’ll do something about those
