Again this is a great project... I can't wait to see this car.
Its also a good motivator for me when I finally get my 3.2 rebuilt.
Get yourself a Dansk Sport Pre Muffler a Sport rear box and a Steve Wong chip as soon as funds allow buddy. You will find that you car has been transformed into a SUPER car!

Thanks for the kind comments - she's sounding pretty good now
Just come back from a week's family holiday in Devon - got some surfing in which was good. Also we ran out of space in the family wagon so I had to take the porsche down for extra luggage space. The cottage had a garage so that was good and I managed to put another 600 miles on the clock.
While I was down there I got the oil changed at around 500 miles
On the journey back tonight I was a bit worried to note that th oil light came on and stayed on. The oil pressure was good though as was the oil temperature and also the oil level
It happened a few days after I'd got it as well but that stopped and the oil light just came on when it was ticking over - today the oil light was on when I was cruising at 70-90. I'm hoping this is just a faulty sensor or something.
Co-incidentally the brake warning light was on at the same time (and the same thing happened when it was on the other week)
Anyone any ideas?
I'll be checking it with Zentrum this week for the 1000 mile oil change

postscript to the story so far (it will never end....)
The car completed it's 1000 miles and went back to zentrum for oil change and check-over. Everything was fine - the rocker gear that was previously starved of oil is still getting plenty. The oil light coming on was due to a blown sensor, which in turn was leaking a small amount of oil - replacing the sensor sorted that out.
So I can now drive it properly. It's fan-kin-tastic - took the long way home a couple of times recently to a road that has a series of tight bends leading to a hairpin, (if you live in Nottingham it's the road leading out of calverton and heading towards Arnold) a nice uphill straight and then more flowing bends. By the time I got to the end my heart was pumping and my face was grinning.
By using the power from 4k to 6K now I've got bags more overtaking power. I'm coming to the conclusion that using the full extent of the rev range is the best thing for these engines - zentrum did a similar rebuild to mine just afterwards for a guy that apparently drives his pretty much balls-out, and in the strip-down they found it was in excellent condition inside (it was stripped because of lots of oil leaks)
When I was trying the old 'italian tune-up' to get ride of the knocking noise during feb-April this year, I was giving it beans far more than I had done over the previous few years. I reckoned by the time I put it into the garage the engine was running sweeter than it ever had done before (apart from keith moon sitting in the back). Driving it 'with spirit' seemed to loosen the engine up and release more power - it may be in the mind but I don't think so.
Obviously this means that in order to treat the engine 'properly' I'll have to keep the revs above 4K - tough job but someone's got to do it.

Thanks for the comments K8atu
Currently awaiting delivery of an M&K silencer(muffler) - read very good things about them. My silencer has a hole that's getting bigger and blows out the exhaust repair paste each time I try and patch it up.
pb11 swears by the M&K so I'll write a report when it comes.
Incidentally I ordered from Pelican - even though their price quoted for shipping was more than the other place stocking (Euroeast) them their ordering system was better. They were quoting $175 for shipping. They then came back to me a week later saying shipping would actually be about $250!!!! I wasn't pleased at the delay, and contacted Euroeast. They have shipped it for around $100, and were a pleasure to deal with. Peilcan were also good to deal (if a little slow initially) with but this difference was too much ignore
Currently waiting for it to arrive.

Bit late for you now Mark, but I've previously ordered from Pelican, found it cheaper elsewhere 'after the event', advised Pelican and they matched the price for me!
Useful to know for future reference...

Thanks for that Ian - althought the pelican price was a bit more the big difference was on the shipping and I wonder if that's mainly because Pelican are on the West Coast
Cheers for the info though - I'll bear that in mind in the future

Hi Sladey,
I've just joined this forum and came across your story and despite the risk of sounding like every other punter who's replied on this thread -:P--- I have to say BL00DY brilliant work mate!!!! That's one hell of an impressive car you created!
I only recently bought my first ever 911 (1975 2.7) so I'm definitely a newbie allround but I did buy it with a view to possibly back dating as you've done and your story has really opened my eyes as to what needs to be done but also that it can be done and well at that...
May I ask a complete newbie & rather personal question - could you tell me roughly what the back date ended up costing when you got through it all???

Apologies if this is not the sort of thing one should ask but as I dont know anyone who has done this type of backdate before I have no reference with which to draw on...
Cheers

Hi Mark
Ive just read this thread and must say you have done an excelent job, I hope my up and coming respray works out as well. Just one query though does it not worry you that if you ever need to remove your spring plates you will have to cut your body as youve done away with the G50 style hole?
BTW did your MK muffler turn up yet? Ive just ordered mine today ill keep you posted on how the 993 HE's work out im slightly concerned about noise levels as ive gone for the dual out mufler.

Hi Steve,
I don't really know on that - I'll just have to wait and see if it's possible. I've kept a hole big enough to take the torsion bar out. I had to make a decision at the time and the clean sill look was a must-have for me. What jobs couldn't I do without removing the spring plates? And are you certain I won't be able to squeeze them out?
Still not got the bleedin muffler
It left Chicago airport last Tuesday, but I don't know what's happened after that - have emailed parcelforce and am waiting a reply. I've heard the dual out's can be noisy - someone on the IB forum has got one fitted - on their recent dyno outing it was generally considered to be the best-sounding 911 there.
I'd be very interested to hear how the 993 HE's work out
Cheers

When I converted my 72 to the G50 setup I tried every way possible to keep the STK hole but without a complete cut down through the bottom of the pannel theres no way the spring plate can be fully removed because it sticks so far out you have to slide the springplate and torsion bar out together through the hole then when its out far enough drop it through the bottom of the hole. As you say you can slide out the T bar to allow height adjustment, the only issue you will have is if you ever need to change the suspension bush's or T bars.
Im currently faced with the same dilema I got some G50 flares fitted and now my cars about to go for paint I carnt decide wether to change back to the old style holes and hope I dont need to do my bush's for a long time or stay as they are and try to find someway to make it less obvious.
Ben at MK is also making me up a side exit pipe so if the dual center out is too loud I can remove and blank them off and revert back to single out.
Ill keep you posted on how the 993 he's work out, my only worry is getting the heat to work.
