Keith, if you are gathering real world examples, here's mine in case helpful:

After converting my 914 to GT (ish) spec, I had the workshop in Wales detail on their invoice the installation of the 3.0 6 pot engine.
I sent that invoice and my V5 off to DVLA, and 4 weeks later the revised V5 came back. No questions from DVLA.
This was all processed by them only last month.

Cheers. This requiring 'proof' of an engine swap is definitely relatively new. My 912/6 conversion was OK'd without, but then that was two years ago now.

This must be causing havoc in the world of vws uncle Keith? There's a huge number of aircooled cars out there with different floor pans and engines? How would the authorities know what sits with what when there's probably no record of what's actually happened?

This has been a really eye opening thread to me, and like Graham, with a RHD converted car with a huge increase in power to weight (mine about 300% as it was 1.7 ) it looks like my winter projects need to accommodate a break fluid warning light, reversing lights and fogs - and a whole load of other cr*p! I hope things soften when the final regs are released, but fear that Graham and I are caught up in it regardless, so need to either embrace or I need to go back to racing it full time, get an MSA log book and give up driving it on the road

Well (just my view), you'd be insane to do a project to try and make your car iva compliant on the basis of a what might be. Unless you wanted to anyway.

We know two things as far as I can see.

1 the MoT change where you'll have to declare your car's fitness for being MoT exempt
2 DVLA/DVSA poo in the mega-modded hot rod world with some real-world examples.

However, the connection between the two that all (or even a subset of) modded historics will have their V5s revoked and need an IVA test is conjecture.

Why would you not wait and see?

We do have to wait to see what come out of the initial mayhem across the classic car, the customised car the race car worlds and others I'm sure.

I am not too clear, but I believe there will be a guideline paper for us Classic modified guys in November 17.
I have emailed again to the authority about this, second email, first a week ago un answered. I hope this shows they are drowning in email questions.

They have invited questions to : roadworthinesstesting@dft.gsi.gov.uk

In the mean time, those who feel affected should try to understand the implications of the new system and even consider removing the mods to get 'out' of this body shell issue.
Converting to LHD would be possible for me, but it makes imho a safe car a dangerous car. That is not my welding skills but the use of a LHD car in a RHD country.

The IVA have a special test system for LHD car being imported today.

Ironically, you may have to modify your classic to meet the demands for testing modified cars....clear Government thinking at it best.

My 69t came from SA in 2000, the 2L (T) engine was replaced before it came into the UK with a 2.2L (T) The body has not been modified at all as far as I now and still looks like a narrow body.

Would it keep the original registration?

Sorry for the slight 'detour' but I have to strongly disagree with that statement.

I have owned many, many LHD cars of many different makes over the past 40+ years & driven many thousands of miles - including 7 years daily commuting to central London - & never found it a problem ...
