Loving this build and can't wait to see it completed! I like it when thoroughly modern things look so right in something so old - those seats are just right but I'm still looking forward to seeing them retrofied.

the project hit a bit of a hiatus for various reasons

my plan to use Porsche GB in Reading didnt really work out, they were super guys and an incredible facility (think I saw 8 carrera gt's there)

however, progress should soon recommence!

there is a little bit more metalwork and prep needed and then into paint

meanwhile - and I think this may well be the 4th engine spec I have considered / mulled over / bought but its now definite ...what a saga.. but I wanted to get it right and when you are spending a lot of money its worth being 100% sure its going to be a) a great drive and b) make sense as a complete car

regular readers will recall that last year I acquired at minimal cost a 2.4S and 915 out of the red targa...

the thing is, great engine though a 2.4S is, something told me I didnt want a screamer for the intended use. And , by the time I'd budgeted for a full rebuild to "as new" spec, incl hi-comp pistons etc it would not have been cheap

AND.. I love my RSR replica but I have always wanted to get FIA papers for it. It runs a 2.7 twin plug hi-comp 911/83 engine @ 245 bhp, great engine but wouldnt win any races and hence the ambition had always been 3 litre engine at some stage

SO. hows this for a plan?? Have acquired a v good 3 litre engine. It will be fully rebuilt and united with the MFI pump (might get away with a 2.7 cam...not sure yet) and intake system off the 2.4S. This will make a nice 74 RS spec or 3 litre "low butterfly" MFI engine. Strong, torquey and fast. That will go into the RSR with a final stage in a few years to go high butterfly or slide throttle and get papers. And the 2.7 will slot in the hotrod. Leaving a few 2.4S parts to hit the "for sale" section in due course. Job done.

Now that sounds like a plan, love the fluid thinking!

The Porsche GB team did look rather worried when I saw them looking at the car. I could hear the teeth being sucked from 20 metres away. Presumably it was the non-standard nature of the car that concerned?

They do seem keen to work on our type of 911s though - I keep meaning to see if they can give me an estimate for painting my 911T.

Will the 2.7 engine be usable enough for a car used daily?

dont see why not! it wont actually be every day. the fuel consumption is a bit spicy but apart from that. all these cars run better when used regularly

That 2.7 would be a joy to use regularly

ah the joys of a total strip down and rebuild....at this stage I ask myself, will it ever all fit back together??!

still not like I'm missing any good driving weather is it

real life has rather got in the way of this project recently, hence zero progress, which is not the end of the world really

however behind the scenes there has been a small amount of progress:

the 2.7 911/83 twin plug that will be going in here should be out of my RSR evo this week to be replaced by its new 3 litre MFI low-but

the Recaro seats have been sent off to Southbound with an instruction to make them look like the Singer ones Southbound think there is a classic Merc leather basketweave finish which is much better than the usual porsche vinyl stuff and cheaper than the Singer leather



and the refurbished 7 & 8 fuchs have arrived at Tuthills:




in July I am hoping my shell will be wheeled into their bodyshop for fettling, gapping and then paint. everything else is ready / on the shelf and just needs fitting... at which point I will no doubt have a heart attack at the "re-assembly" estimate

and with nothing substantive happening to the car (or more accurately collection of bits), I couldn't help planning some of the finishing touches...

Right then

Finally after a few steps backwards the Hotrod project has momentum

I was not entirely happy with the shell and some remedial work was necessary. I am not going to get into it on a public forum. I have bitten the bullet and gone for new door skins and new rear quarters amongst a whole host of detail work

The shell should be in paint next week. Land Rover Keswick Green is still my top pick but I might bottle it and use a Porsche colour at the last minute

Nice job Dan - at least you know you have a great shell to bolt everything to.

Why did you change the seat fixings, are they for modern Recaro's?

I say do the closest Porsche colour: Leaf Green.

That's what I always advise given the opportunity, and one of these days someone will do it... Please!?
