Oh yes gary, the heater tube over the top is a huge blessing, the 2.4's and onwards are a real pain.

Unfortunately, there's never a situation where the rear inner wing is removed, but the layer in question is any good. Therefore, I've never been in a position to take a mould off of the offfending area so that I can press / form it easier.

As it is I just have to handform each one, which is obviously functional, but a little tedious  . If anyone had this panel un-used, I'd be delighted to pay a generous rental fee for the use-of for a couple of weeks :P .

Dad only needs a couple of "simple" repair panels - your effort is over the top

 The first part of that is done as well: I'm rather pleased with it, though I say it myself. Just three more bits to do ....

Work over the last few days has been on the near side torsion area of the car. This area was not as bad as the offside but still required quite a bit of work. The inner wing was worse and will be replaced after the panel is backdated.

Once the inner wing was removed it looked like this.

The poor area was cut out.

And it was found that an area of the inner panel and the rear bulkhead was rotten. This was cut out and repaired.

The new torsion tube end was welded in.

The outer strengthening panel fitted

Painted and looking alot better.

Image

The jig fitted very well

Image

The foor has now been welded in, this means that the inner wing repair on the offside can now be fitted as can the nearside.

The next area is the parcel shelf, this is going to be a tricky area so will will have to see how it goes.

Why did the factory put the heater tube under the torsion bar tube?

Great fabrication Barry.

Funnily enough, I was wondering exactly the same thing earlier today: I'm sure that tube starts and finishes at the same places, so why re-tool and put the tube in a much more vunerable position?

Thinking about it, I wonder if it's a seat-belt and rear seat mount issue: I'll have to go back through some pictures to try to refresh my memory. Logic suggests that the factory are unlikely to have made the change purely for fun.

Lost a whole week the week before last (man-flu, very unusual for me), so now playing catch-up, and I'm sure John would like to see the car heading for paint sooner rather than later. Finished the floor today, repaired the rear crossmember (nearside) and did a small repair on the rear bulkhead. Start looking at the parcelshelf area in the morning ....

:) Thanks, and yes, it does feel like it sometimes, although there are a few missing from my 'collection', mainly SWB cars. Not done a 2.2T though funnily. I think I've got the full set of everything after that in 2.2's, 2.4's (lots) and 2.7's (73, 74 and 75, all MFI cars).

No, only two as far as I can remember, Tim's being one, and a '72 (I think) 2.4E.

I haven't had a count up for a while, but John's must be 15-17th 911, so the ratio between Targa and coupe is very low.

Quite, it must take a deep intake of breath to rip it apart to that extent.

Me too! but it should be good for a long time after Barry has finished with it. Its very exciting seeing the car come together and trying to imagine what the end product is going to look like.

Kind Regards

Incoming 2.2s Targa at the end of the year.....got to get those percentages up!

John - I never thought you'd get a photo that looked like the swamp car - but blimey, you're going to have an entirely new shell at this rate. How cool is that!

Barry - Quality as ever - is there nothing that defeats you? Do you ever look at a car and think - hmmm, maybe not....

John,

What amazes me is that when the inner wing is removed the whole thing doesn’t fall into a heap on the floor! Outstanding work by Barry, you must be pleased.

Hi Richard, hope you're well? :)

There was one car that I looked at that really was beyond saving (2.2S Coupe), and one other that was very close: not through rust though, terrible previous work. That one has now, I believe gone in the bin.

Garry: yes the inner wing out does make it a bit floppy, but I've got the B-piller braced up (just visible in pics), and more to the point, I've the other side as my guide. I'll set the outer body measuring rig to one side, and set the other to the same value: it's for exactly this sort of thing that I built it. In addition, you'll note the nearside door is in place: this has already been marked up and photographed against the old inner wing to give me another guide for the inner wing placement. Just gives another insurance policy.

I was saying to John earlier that actually, these big chunks of removed panels aren't the problem, just as long as you've retained all of the reference points, it's the multitude of tiny fiddly repairs that really eat the hours up. I'm sure John will pop up some highlights (lowlights?) of some of the parcelshelf area soon. Suffice to say there'll be a lot more work sorting this area and the rear screen surround than doing say, the floor replacement and all of the sill-work.

Thanks for the comments as ever :) .
