Finally before I left it, I polished the edges - I bought one of those cheap polishing kits at an autojumble years ago.
Doesn’t come out brilliantly in this pic but trust me it’s shiny

Nice work as usual Mark. For the ignition switch is there any reason you can’t lower it as it doesn’t look central in the extrusion?

For the double sided tape, what about the thin foam with sticky tape on both sides that you get for double glazing decorative strips, etc. B&Q might be your friend, otherwise a glazing company. Failing that, how much do you need - I think I still have part of a roll in the shed.

Gary you’re right about it not being central - but none of the switches (or heater controls) are half way. Dunno if that’s a consequence of being a later car. Not sure if I can lower everything, but maybe a smaller disc for the ignition switch over might be an option.
Peter thanks - I’ll get down to B&Q
And thanks Jonny - I’ll order some of that

Try a search for 3M VHB tape - has variants for different materials - should be able to find one that works for your application

Mark, I got oodles of POS display d/s foam tape, also 2 part acrylic adhesive used for sticking aircraft wings together. What are you sticking to what, I can advise if needed.

great thanks Nige
I'll be sticking aluminium onto painted steel. MOst of it will be held by other brackets as well but the one on the glovebox door will just be held by the tape so needs to be secure

OK so a bit more progress....
Firstly a fuckup on my part. If you remember the mounting tabs for my hazard warning switch had snapped off (probably by me when removing it). I found a second had one on eBay with the tabs and ordered it for £50 delivered.
The switch arrived yesterday, and I unwrapped it whilst driving back to work. Sure enough it looked fine and the tabs were intact. “So these are the things that snapped” I thought while squeezing them in to see how they flex. Except they didn’t flex. They snapped, instantly. I’d had the part in my had for all of 30 seconds and managed to break it in that time.
I’m putting it down to 35 year old plastic becoming brittle. This morning I thought ‘sod the expense’ - I’ll order new ones from the OPC. Spoke to Keith at Nottingham OPC and ordered one in. “How much is that?” I asked. Keith replied “Well with the discount it’s £50.80”.
Hmmmmmm.
During the week I also bought some thin steel. This slides inside the aluminium moulding and is what the basket weave is actually glued to. When I measured the original one I had it was only about 0.6mm thick.
My local metal merchants didn’t have anything thinner than 1mm so I bought some of that. That actually worked out fine.
Ian had some basket weave left over so he let me use some of that . I wanted to try dying it to match the rest of my interior and I had a little bit of dye left over from doing the seats, so I gave it a try

Pretty shite, I think you’ll agree. However once it dried bits of it didn’t look too back so I gave it another coat. And another. And another. Eventually it got to this.
Which is just about right

You may remember I had issues with the ignition surround being too big. Well after a bit of thought to decided to stick it in the lathe (this is after it’s been turned down. The cutting discs are just to hold it square)
