I see a lot of campers from mild to wild around here, but non as sharp as this one of yours.
Looks very useable and dependable and certainly not common on the road. :)

Been final tune the old lady lately. It has a carefully built BJ8 engine and we’re within a whisker of BMC’s claimed 150bhp at just under 5000rpm. It’s 5% rich and needs more accurate ignition timing so we’re going to use a 123 distributor and set it up on the rolling road.

The secret seems to be in the cylinder head and it being correctly gas flowed because the rolling road owner was surprised it made so much power. He’s seen them with hot cams and triple Weber’s only giving 130bhp.

An E Type gives about 170bhp for a claimed 265, so it appears BMC were rather more honest.

why don't you try that 170 instead of 265 over on the E Type forum and see what reaction you get

It would be predictable, so unnecessary. However if you read Walter Hassan’s book, A Climax in Coventry (I know), he and Harry Mundy designed the XK engine, he won five world championships with Coventry Climax and he was involved the the design of the Jaguar V12, he explains that the twelve produced 272 bhp and that the XK 170. My son has put a couple of his customers on rolling roads and a friend still has one his father bought new, it was in Classic Car recently.

I had a 4.2 MK1 E Type many years ago, it replaced my wife’s Healey that John Chatham had built. They’re lighter and much more civilised but not hugely faster. They won’t rev beyond 5000, which equates to 125 mph but 160 on the speedo. Steady Barker was a friend and he told me that the road test cars were much faster than the ones customers got. I replaced my E Type with a DB5 which did 125 in fourth and then you changed into top and accelerated to over 140.

My current Healey shows 120mph when the Satnav says 83, which will give you an idea of speedo accuracy on older cars.

In Porsche terms a 2.2 911E would have a similar performance to an early E Type, but corner considerably faster and more safely.

I'd post some pics I took of the route but this is the non-porsche pic thread so howsabout a pic of the mrs chundering behind the car in the side mirror instead (heavy night + my driving)!

That pic was on the B4518 between Llandinoes and Staylittle.

But as said... plenty of similarly pleasant roads to choose from around there!

An Andy Saunders car - he's built some fairly wacky things - I almost bought the blue Panhard ( shown on his website) from him a few years ago
