Great story told at Jenk's funeral regarding the Mille Miglia. He was not a man known for his sartorial elegance and when he was asked why he had only taken three socks with him on the MM, he replied that he wore two of them, the third being a clean spare. When the socks became a bit rank, he'd swap one of them for the clean one, wash the dirty one in the hotel room sink and then repeat the process the next day...Lightweight_911 wrote:

Good old DSJ.
I've read and re-read all of his Letters From Europe and Continental Notes columns literally hundreds of times.
There is no better way to be transported back to the heyday of open roads and European touring.
I recall that he was even the first journo to mention the DDK in print
