Doh ! It sounds terrible, can't get a good tickover. Pops and bangs like a good'un !
Quick compression test No 1 and No 2 have basically nothing !!
OK, check Inlet clearances tomorrow and then its engine out !!
Oh well !! so much for a good start !

oh no
hopefully its a valve issue and you can adjust it; it sounded fairly ok when you started it initially so could it be the valve clearances are closing up when warm?
if you need to get the engine out and need a hand let me know

This is my hope. It starts and runs for a short time, very well. Then, it is like a switch is thrown, and the tick over goes all rough. Listen to the video, its on there too. The initial start is far too good to be a major problem. What I described in the video as fuel leaking between the manifold and head is probably unburned combustion gasses pushing back past the inlet valve.
Fingers crossed.
Cheers for the offer of help, I'll let you know.

now you mention it the car started and ran well first time out, but once it had run for 30-secs it started to get a bit lumpy..
sounds like it should be top-end, but just for peace of mind it might be worth pulling the dip-stick and looking for any exhaust/blowing from the dip-stick tube? would tell you if there is any blow-by past the piston rings..

Hope it's something simple Tim

argh, the stress this causes me- i feel the pain.
Tim, Carlo has a 3.2 engine spare in his garage. could you fiddle with it to get it going for CLM? Gives you a bit of a breather to rebuild, possibly, that 2.2 block?
What happened to your original block? the "original" targa was a 69 wasnt it?

I see no reason why I can't get the 2.2 going yet. I'll let you know if a 3.2 becomes an option.
The car came to me with a tired 2.4 in it, the original engine long gone. This 2.4 will be rebuilt with new P&B to make a nice High comp. twin spark 2.4, this is a long way off a reality. For now the 2.2 is the best option. I don't think there is much wrong, I reset the clearances, maybe I got them wrong. At worst its going to be re-timing the engine I hope

Cheers all

Ignore my previous post, i wasn't thinking (i'm at work, hence brain not engaged)..
Presumably the dipstick is into the oil tank (as on later cars) rather than the crank-case so you (presumably) won't see it blowing smoke out of the dipstick tube if the blow-by is past the piston rings into the case anyway

Could be a lump of carbon thats been disslodged and is now stuck between valve and seat. Fingers crossed.

I now have compression

I had a lump of "stuff" under 1 valve seat, and a tight valve clearance.
I'll put it back together tomorrow and go for a restart

I put it all back together and things are now back on track

, Not perfect, but I have a pretty good tick-over at least

Big sigh of relief!
How did you shift the trapped bit? Rev the nuts off it...
