Also did a test run tonight on the speaker grille for the door trim. Worked out quite well and a massive improvement on my earlier version I did a long time back.

If your struggling to find a blind press stud type fitting.Try hi-fi speaker grill clips.They push together snugly,and ideal for this type of application.Great work by the way.Something tells me you might have done this work before!

Got the Tenax fasteners ready to go. Just need to find the rear seat backs so I can position the shelf fitting correctly. Probably going to put a metal reinforcement in as well so it doesn’t tear the cardboard.

Easy stuff first Tenax fittings fixed to the shelf and the ends of the straps rounded off for clearance:



Then for reasons I don’t understand I decided this evening was the time to do the dash! I’d ripped the old vinyl off a while back and filled the cracks.


Once I’d sanded off the old glue and cleaned it I went for what I thought was a sensible approach and tried to just glue the upper section first, get the feature line clean then do the rest.


Don’t do this as it ends up a lumpy mess and you have to tear it all off again…


So attempt 2 was just glue the whole thing and get on with it. Took me over an hour to get the glue off

Cleaned the bench then took the brave pills:





Last step was to use the speaker grille upside down to clamp the vinyl into the corners. I’m going to make a MDF grille as this one is distorted and wouldn’t now fit in the hole anyway due to the vinyl thickness if I trimmed it to match the dash.



I’ve a few edges to tidy, but that’s pretty much done. With this and the parcel shelf done I can think about glass…

Great job on the dash Gary ! what was your strategy the 2nd time around to get it crease free - did you start with the flat top and stretch it down over the front?

Thanks, I started on the top roll above the instruments and pushed it down into the feature line trying to stop it sticking to the flat surface whilst getting it lined up.

Then turned it over and pulled it down the front, carefully trimming off excess and heating it to get some more stretch. Then turned it back again and did the flat bit and then pulled it out to the ends and under the cowl.

You don't fool me. After the pic of the stripped and glued dash, you just substituted a picture of a bran new dash.

Am I right in thinking you put contact adhesive on the back of the vinyl too as you progressed?

Spray contact adhesive all over both surfaces for the start

I’m using a bit of the EVO stick for the corners where it needs topping up

I need to make a bracket to support a the front of the door top trim as this is a 993 door so the metal work is different behind the trim.

I’m not putting door bins on so that’s complete for now… other than doing the other side

Are door pockets going on Gary?

No, I’ve not had them fitted for a very long time.

I only have the two front rigid bins and one fold out. And even they are in poor condition so budget is going on more important things like carpet and a windscreen!
