We're the originals in line?

They were better, but not spot on. No more than a couple of mm out. And on a silver car it wasn’t obvious!

Trouble is so much has changed on the car the stack of tolerances of the quarter and door may be conspiring against me, even if the parts were exactly the same.

And once I’ve seen the error there’s no going back

Well some bulbs are lit up…
Dash wiring finished this evening and knee pads/glovebox etc all fitted.
There’s also a hidden USB supply under the ashtray with a built in voltmeter.
I powered it up with a little power supply my Dad used for testing his radio gear. It’s only low power so won’t run wipers or anything, so next step is to charge up one of the long dead batteries and give it a go. Need to prove it all works before putting the heater in whilst I can still get to it.

My dials don't do that at all!

That’s the plan!

In real life the instruments are like a badly lit nightclub despite new bulbs throughout. My phone has flattered the brightness!

Have you thought about LED's ?

When I restored the gauges in my Giulietta, I swapped all of the gauge lights - plus the coloured warning lights - for LED's ... made a big difference to their brightness at night !

The lights are on a rheostat on the headlight knob are they not? Maybe you have it turned down Gary?

That’s all the way up They are fine for me, I don’t like brightness inside the car at night.

Headlights will be getting LEDs though as I do like to see where I’m going!

Depending on your lamps h1/h4 there is a hack available where you put in combined main/dip bulbs in both the main and dipped beam spots and link the terminals for extra brightness. The lenses and reflectors aren't up to modern standards.

I think also the wiring is a marginal too...
I tried led's a while back but would not work any better.
Maybe my 'stat is not working.
Rarely drive the 911 at night, so not too bothered. CLM is a great target Gary.

I feel soon you will make big progress when the drive train etc are in.

Getting close to finishing the underbonnet. Got the fan box and piping sorted tonight. Just need to find the scuttle support bracket and the cover, must be in the shed as they aren’t in the garage!



Putting self tappers into the paint for the grille was fun!

Underbonnet is all now done and I’ve tested the fan and wipers and it all works! Plenty of airflow through the new vent in the clock space, but it will be interesting to see how that actually performs on the road.

I’ve built up the other door and made the same mods to the trim.

Then onto the fun and games of repro bumper trims.

As bought they are crap… feedback from many users on Instagram would suggest they are all like this and need bending to fit. Luckily I had my old ones to use as a pattern as I wouldn’t have wanted to try directly to the car.



By the time you’ve made them fit you have to cut the end off next to the reflector.

The front one is just as bad, but that’s a job for another day as it’s horribly unwieldy

Those strips are a pain. Mine are still the 73' S originals, bit pitted, bit scruffy but fit a dream, or as much as they can be.

Whenever I do similar work to your I always lavish wax onto the paint before the parts go on. Are you doing the same?

Were you tempted to mod the wipers to intermittent 'stage' rather than the blunt T spec of 2 speeds?

The paint is heavily waxed already, so should be ok. I’ve put a blob of grease on all the studs holding them on so hopefully they are able to come off again if needed.

To resolve the mismatch I ‘dressed’ (i.e hit it with a block of wood) the 1/4 window flange to gain 1mm. The rest came from trimming the door trim profile to the window frame. The clips don’t work then so the rear three have been replaced with 3M tape. The gap isn’t parallel, and it looks different from every angle, but there is genuinely nothing I can do about that one!

Thought I was the only crazy one, chashing mm here and there.Sometimes,you have to sit back then realise these cars didnt fit this well when they left the factory.Its the only way to reconcile, the voices in your head!
