I presume the pipe was clamped inside the tunnel, so therefore could not move at all, hence it was pierced by the bolt? I suppose at least with the new pipe installed it will be floating in the tunnel to some extent (especially in the middle section where it will not be possible to secure) and therefore cannot happen again in the future.

I do feel for you though
Thank you for the kind sentiment. My friends who have jumped in to help are all amazed how calm I am by this episode. It's a bit of a nuisance but it is not significant in the scheme of things. The young guy helping who tightened the bolt was mortified by what happened.
The fuel line was run behind one bracket in the tunnel side so could not move just forward of that where the bolt did the damage. The fuel line was also copper rather than steel which would make it easier to puncture. Copper was used as I have heard reports that plated steel was subject to deterioration of the plating by Ethonol fuels. Probably in hindsight not a good idea. But then again different length seat mounting bolts were the culprit.

You must feel like the Porsche gods are doing their best to work against you Kirk.
To balance this out the car looks great, yellow is such a fantastic colour for a period ‘racer’.

Mike

Clive, that prospect does not bear thinking about. I would have probably have to have waited until all 45 litres of fuel had emptied from the tank. Fortunately, we had the car outside so both car doors could be opened to their full extent.

Yes Mike I have thought that over the years the build has taken However, I had wrongly assumed that the issues, problems and let downs were over. Fitting a roll cage: what could possibly go wrong?
Thank you for the complement about the car and its colour.

I used copper on my 914 in an early iteration of the many engine combinations. A very good choice from the perspective of never rusting. So swings and roundabouts really, I would definitely not put in the bad idea box.

If it makes you feel better (probably not), back in the late 1970s, Noel Edmonds (yes, him) owned a GT40. He wanted it retrimmed for more comfortable road use and approached Hot Car magazine where I was working for recommendations. He was pointed in the direction of guy we knew (can't remember his name right now) and off he went. Said trimmer made new panels to finish off the wide sills, and screwed them in place. Nobody told him that the sills contained 'bag' fuel tanks, so he merrily drilled away so he could use some self tappers. You can guess the rest. Two new bag tanks and a depleted bank account later, the job was done...

PS - the car looks superb!

Keith,
Thanks for your input and a nice story which does give me a little lift although as I said earlier I have remained calm about the situation
We have emptied the fuel tank and removed it as well as lowering the front suspension cross beam. Given up for today. Monday we will set to again and should hopefully get it all sorted if we can find some suitable MFI fuel pipe.
Thank you for the nice compliment. Much appreciated.

Regards,
Kirk

My reliable and infamous assistant has posted one of my truly magnificent pictures. Thank you very much Richard. The picture of the bits that started the ball rolling for the current little bit of bad luck.
Correct diameter drawn tube ( not the cheap welded option).
I have another set if someone wants a cage building. I can also get a set of the correct cast feet for welding into the shell.
So unashamed plug over.

Micro Update.
To those of you following the trials and joys of ST clone motoring: after the hiatus of Friday 13th all is back to normal. Whilst I have been working on my house Vince has got the damaged fuel line replaced from the front of the car, front suspension cross member back in place after being lowered a little and the fuel tank clamped back after the tank was raised a little. The copper fuel line had two nasty bolt holes in it rather than the assumed one. What is one hole amongst friends ( KS and Thomas? ) The fuel gauge is showing about 40 litres still in the tank. Thank goodness I did not fill it to its 100 litre capacity prior to the little problem. The carpet and interior actually does not smell of fuel at all. My detailing buddy Ryan doing an excellent job. The lightweight carpet supplied by Stretch has not. Indeed it fits much better now than prior to its soaking in 95 octane. The half roll cage looks fab. Just a few issues left to sort out: oil level gauge not working and neither is the windscreen washer. These are mere trifles compared to what happened on Friday. Very short bolts have been inserted on the centre tunnel to fix the lightweight seat brackets in place. So I am crawling to the finish line........
unless something else crops up. Really looking forward to an opportunity to use the car. I may get my assistant to post a really interesting picture when he wakes up from his afternoon nap.
