The last job completed is one I have been toying with for ages, and was undecided. In a moment of either clarity or madness, I ordered the RS brake cooling ducts and set about fitting them.

With the indicators and fog stripped out, I marked where the duct outlet was as a starting point for a cut and then pressed on and cut them out. These then needed elongating to allow the duct to push fully home.

Image

Image

Image

I could then get a first view of them loose fitted. I must confess, I am starting to like the orange and black combo so was pretty tempted to leave as is (which would have been much easier as they were a proper pain to paint)

Image

Image

Image

But, I decided there was too great a risk of it looking amateurish and unfinished, so I pressed on and painted them. I trusted the fact that it was GT3 orange and ordered some...

Image

I was not convinced in the early spray outs that the colour was right, but after 1000 grade wet and dry, and good coat of lacquer they came up really well, and the match is spot on. So onto fitting and I realised that the blind fitting towards the centre of the car could not be reached in situ because of the bumper bar and front boot

Image

So off the car I used fibreglass to effect a repair on the cracked bumper. Unfortunately as it cured, the way it was hanging actually opened up the crack. So I will need to come back to this later and try and make less visible - at least it wont flex now

Image

With it off, I could elongate the holes slightly to get the duct fitting exactly square in the recess. Despite them being drilled dead centre, they were still bit off on first fit which I wasn't happy with, so I finessed the gap

Image

and dry fitted the indicator to ensure all was square

Image

before setting the ducting pipes as I didn't them to be just for show

Image

And given the pipes are pressed really tight inside the duct I added a run of duct tape round the outside as an insurance policy

Image

Image

There are a few issues left to address;

1. There is a chance the oil cooler is leaking, but I cannot tell if this is a remnant from the past

Image

2. Broken bumper stays (well rusted through actually) so I need to make new ones as I did the rear

3. Refit the arch liners and fit the duct ports for the pipes

The bumper was a proper pain to fit, rusty bolts, blind fixings etc etc, but pleased with how it looks

Thanks chaps

I have been distracted by painting the floor in the garage which was long overdue and was making working out there tedious. As everyone knows floor paint is usually cack, but so far this seems ok, and has a sand like additive to make it non-slip. Time will tell.....

Anyhow, back to the build. The finished front cover

Image

Fitted

Image

Image

And then the outlets for the front ducts - these were a PITA as the line is double skinned at this point

Image

Some blind fixings

Image

And then mount the air inlets, which I am using as outlets. These have little gauze covers which are held on with epoxy. Not a very elegant solution (it is what the supplier recommends) so I will probably create something more elegant at some point.

Image

Image

And then fitted the rear bumper stays which I made what seems like months ago. Oh hang on, it was.

Image

Whilst there I found the 2nd poor repair on the car. The NSR wing has a bit of filler bubbling on it. The paint has gone through thankfully, but it has always been clear to me that the wing is hiding some secrets. Turns out it is not hiding them very well

Image

The rear light covers are clearly wrecked but if you look at the wing it appears that someone has gone at it with a set of tin shears, probably to allow the back edge to be pulled back in line with the engine cover then plated on the outside. Not pretty, and a water trap hence the bubbling. So rear corners are on the list for when it goes for paint in a couple of years.

I have found one other problem along the way which is on the NSF. The damage is hidden under the inner wing liner, which on the NS I did not remove the back edge - I am saving that for another day when I have driven the car and enjoyed it, so I can have some perspective. It is another not pretty repair, it appears the NSF wheel has come adrift and been forced back into the body, damaging the arch and the leading edge of the pan. At the same time the oil cooler console was damaged on the OSF but that has been patched up and is serviceable; I will get a 2nd hand one if I find one at a reasonable price, and certainly if the cooler does leak. Apart from that it is very straight indeed

A couple of weeks I picked up the gearbox. We had jet washed it at the workshop but it was still pretty nasty, given the years of leaking and the heavy coat of waxoyl everywhere. So on the way past with the family I picked up the box and last weekend set about making it look as clean as the engine and suspension.

Nothing over the top, just clean. Mid way through shot shows why I was keen to do it

Image

Then done, bar painting some plates and brackets which I will do this weekend

Image

Image

And then got the car out to give it a clean and see if the 4cm drop made a difference. I think there is a little to go to achieve RS height, but I will wait until the engine is in before I adjust it because it will pitch the front up a little. Still, definitely looking more purposeful...

Who knows, I might even stop the car winking at the weekend.....

Thanks very much

James (and Ian!) - the floor paint is Tetrosyl Propex per the below with additive. I got it from paints4u (I only meant to get the lava orange paint and stumbled across it.

Coverage is pretty amazing. 5l for £65 pretty much did 2 coats of my 10m x 5m (4 bays) garage. The new front bit is super smooth, the old bit is the ‘working bay’ so rough and breaking up. I bought a 2nd tin to do a 3rd coat on these two bays. I have not pulled jacks around on it yet but the cars have not lifted it yet. The sticky Toyos on the Boxster did mark it but I did park it on 24hr old paint, as was a bit keen to press on. I moved the 964 this am and it had not touched the surface which was fully cured.

Image

The pic above shows the worst of the floor in front of the bench, where I weld and built my jig to drive out and in the wheel studs on the 914/6, so it took some abuse but still the paint has stuck. Rollers it all on using an extension after only a sweep.

Cheers
