An interesting day!
Took the Boxster to the ever trustworthy Zuffenhaus for a service and MoT today.
Asked them to check the transmission oil level just to be sure the droning at the rear was not lack of oil. They did this while I waited as usual.
Those jobs done and called down to the desk to pay.
MoT OK, Service OK, and handed a large piece of plastic 'ducting' they found wedged to the gearbox and trans rear brace 'triangle'....
The plastic part had been ripped off (3 pop rivets) and pushed back to wedge in the box/rear brace. Near side only.
The part is riveted to a thin steel ribbed brace plate and new costs £410. Sounded like an ebay job to me, or repair the part handed over by welding the plastic together using a soldering iron.
This made me wonder about the noise from the transmission and so it was, the drive back home, 30 miles on B/A/motorway speeds and no noise from the back!
Just maybe the plastic was chattering against things as the air passed over it between 40 and 60 mph.
No to get too excited, I'll drive the car again this week and see if it is all ok, and if so the tyre theory was a Red Herring.
Plastic part:
And where it is on the diagram, part #6 is £410, the two plastic 'wings' are the small upright sections.
